Remington 700 in .221 Fireball
« on: December 18, 2003, 09:06:06 AM »
Anyone shot the new Remington 700 in .221 fireball?  Looked at one today, very nice sporter weight rifle.  Claim is 3600 fps w/40 grain bullets.

Looking for opinions.

Tom

Yes, my buddy has one, and he has a trigger job on it.  Very sweet little gun out to 200 yards.  I don't think those velocity figures are right.  3600 fps with a 40 grainer is up there nipping on the heels of the .22-250 and the .220 Swift.  My friend's gun likes the lighter bullets.

I think your velocity is overstated by about 600 fps. If that velocity were correct we all would trash our 223 Rem's and 22-250's. Better try chronographing a few.

Agreed on the velocity claim.  That is what the gun shop owner was jabbering about.  My research shows around 3200 fps with 40 grain and rl7.  ANyway, bought the rifle and tweaked the trigger down to 3 lbs.  Loaded up some 40 gr Vmax over a range of RL7 charges.  Waiting  for the scope mount to show up, and then will have a better idea.  Going to use it alongside my 22-250 for shorter range stuff.
