The two areas you mentioned are still excellent deer and black bear hunting. If anything has changed it's the fact that fewer people hunt the nothern zone each year.DEC was keeping camp sites open for the ML season at Pieco lake and Lewey lake, but that may have changed. It has been a couple of years since I made the trip myself ,but if my health holds up I would like to do hunt up there myself this yr.

Years past,  hunting was great at Horseshoe lake just out of the town of Tupper Lake. Forever wild camping used to be permitted there but I'm not sure anymore. Another excellent place is at the top end of Long Lake at the cold River Flow Area but you need time to hunt that area because it's huge but so are the deer.

Give a call to the NYS Ranger School at Wanakena / Cranberry Lake... There is terrific hunting along the Oswegatchie River.. A 1 hr. canoe paddle upiver is all it takes... 6 ponds Wilderness... My experience with the DEC / Rangers, has been very positive in designing hunts!

Another good bet would be Cedar River Flow;  just beyond Indian Lake.  There is a primitive campground at the flow and individual campsites on dirt road toward Inlet.  If you have a canoe-even better.

lonewolf, there have been a lot of road and campsite closures recently due to the flooding from the last two weeks of rain.  Check the DEC website for current info (http://www.dec.ny.gov/) and call ahead to be sure the roads or campsites you  want to use are open.

edit: here's a ink on temporary road closures.  It only applies to DEC lands and NOT to state parks etc.  http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/65004.html
