Pirogue Anyone?
« on: January 26, 2011, 04:28:53 PM »
Just curious if anyone else uses one to hunt and fish out of. I have a blast in mine. Just don't shoot a shotgun to the side. Learned the hard way to turn the boat to face what I was shooting at ::)

Not nearly as different as you would think. The pirogue is a lot like a open kayak. I have owned and used both. I like the open pirogue a little better. Right now I have 2, one is made by moccasin the other I built in a stitch and glue fashion without the stitch. It is built out of 2 sheets of 1/4 plywood and fiberglass. Next one I will modify the plans so it will be wider and a bit more stable.

A couple of years back there was an article with plans for a pirogue in Backwoodsman magazine.  It was so popular that they reran it a while back.  I keep thinking of building one....

WH Do it you will enjoy the build and love the boat! Just fair warning if the plans are for the 1 I built it may be a bit tippy at first ::) But the maneuverability is amazing. It is a great little boat for ponds and creeks. I use mine more than I do the Bass Tracker or jon boat. Much easier for 1 man to handle.

how long is yours sqirrel?  I had a 8 footer once and it was a bit tippy, but my neighbor has a 11 footer that is much more stable.

The one I built is just over 14 ft long but is less than 30 in. wide. Very tippy! My moccasin is 12 ft and about 32- 36 in. wide. Very stable and more comfortable. The next one I build will be around 14 ft and 32-36in wide.

Prefer the "POKE BOAT" more stable and works and track the same as a Piroque

Back in my younger days used the pirogue for running trotlines on Black Bayou in N.W. Louisiana. These were fashioned after the original style pirogues. As squirrellluck mentioned very maneuverable and fast! The only time in my life that I ever smoked and that was only a cigar just to keep mosquitoes at bay. The fun started when you got a 15 to 25 lb catfish on the trotline and trying to convince it to get in the pirogue! This was always at dark of night which always added to the action. In some spots had to be extra careful around some of the cypress trees with low hanging limbs a favorite spot for the always agressive cottonmouths! They had a bad habit of dropping in the boat.
Always wanted to take pirogues down Dorcheat Bayou  and duck, deer. and squirrel hunt along the banks. Do not know that would work now , probably all sewn up in private leases!
And as squirrellluck said if you are going to shoot a shotgun out of it be darn sure the bow is in the same direction as the target!!

I enjoy any boat that requires a paddle, oar, or pole for locomotion.  I currently own 3 canoes and one kayak, while I enjoy them all my favorite is my 12ft. solo canoe for the creeks and rivers that I paddle.  I imagine if I lived near some swamps a pirogue would be on my gotta have list.

I made what was called a two board boat once. Back in the day when you could get really wide lumber they made the same shape boat, actually a narrow dory. The plan I used modified the original to use plywood. To make the bottom you cut one sheet of 4X8 plywood on a diagonal and then butted the two wide ends together. Another sheet of plywood was ripped into 12 inch strips for sides. It ended up being a long narrow flat bottom boat much like a pirogue but made differently.

I rowed mine, it was a dream to row, I used to even row it for no reason other than the pleasure of it, like taking a stroll in the evening.

Yeah, they're great. I been fishin(and a little huntin') outa one for over 30 years. Currently i have a one man cypress strip canoe-9.5 feet and pointed at both ends,a ten foot "creek" fiberglass, paddle or troll, and a man & a half cypress strip with a dedicated trolling motor. I know, I should post pics, sorry. These boats are rare anymore, usually low country blackwater boats for bream fishing in coastal rivers. It is an art to learning to truly handle one with a paddle. Years to master. Floated many miles down the mighty waccamaw in my youth and still get out a few times a year now. Nothin like a big redbreast in current makin the line sing on your fiberglass(now graphite) pole. These are the eastern nc/sc version of a "pirogue". Great to duck hunt out of also.

I use a duck bill on a pole for shallow water, just stand up and do what you want. We use da pe'ro for fishin, huntin, and crabin, down home in south La. Best boat for da marsh...............
