Recommended cartridge for a 10" .223 Rem barrel
« on: January 22, 2011, 04:28:12 PM »
I have a 10" .223 Remington barrel.  Anyone have any experience with these?  What is the recommended factory ammo for these?

Any other insight appreciated.

Thanks,

Any factory load you try is going to give you a great big fireball and lots of blast.  Guaranteed to get you lots of attention at the gun range.  If you hand load, IMR-4198 and lighter 40 grain bullets produce much less fire and brimstone.  All loads I've tried produce outstanding accuracy out of my 10" barrel, however I have shot very few factory loads.

I've had good luck with 24.5gr 2230 behind a 50 - 55gr bullet.  Not too obnoxious and accurate.  For a real blast get a mould and shoot cast bullets (50gr ahead of 10.0 #2400).
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

What Curtis said.  I traded my 10" .223 for a Super 14.  The accuracy in both is outstanding but I just got tired of the muzzle blast/fireball in the shorter barrel.  Some folks like it though.
