Winchester 94 value?
« on: January 22, 2011, 01:00:02 PM »
I have a Winchester 94 chambered in 30-30 win. Manufactured in 1974 with a William’s peep sight that I just bought sight unseen for my daughter for $300. When the gun arrived it didn’t exactly match the description I was given over the phone. The Metal is all in good shape with no rust but the bluing on the receiver is discolored in some areas and has a few minor scratches. It looks like the discoloration could be from oils/acid from previous owner’s hands. It's mainly in areas that would see frequent contact with a person’s hands. The wood is in fair condition with the signs of many years of hunting but no abuse. The bore is very clean with no rust.  Did I pay a good price for this gun? The person I bought it off of said he would buy it back if I’m unsatisfied.
   Thanks, Mike

i really dont think that is a bad deal at all. the peep sight alone, and im just guessing ,could cost yu 30 to 65 buks alone.around here 300 buks is pretty common price for a used 30-30.if fact if it was a gun shop or pawn shop they would be asking more for sure.a pre installed peep would really make it worth more to me.ones with a lot more damage than yours easily bring 250$, jus a few short years ago yu could buy all the 30-30 rifles yu wanted for 150 to 200 bucks. not no more.

I agree with hillbill, years back you could get used 94's for cheap. But since winchester isn't making them the prices have went up and stayed there. I have a couple I bought years ago and both have the staining or discoloration on the receiver from being carried. But the bores look like new. I think the williams rear goes from about 45 to about 65.00 depending upon which model you have. frank

Sounds like a fair deal to me based on what I've seen them going for in my area.

The discoloration on the receiver is probably not from handling or neglect on the part of the previous owner.  When Winchester changed to the post-64 model they began using a cast receiver and used a proprietary finish on it.  It soon became apparent the finish would not last and at one time you could send in your gun and they would re-do it (for a price!!).
I'm not sure, but I think a 1973 model would be towards the end of them using that type of finish.  It really doesn't hurt the function any, but is just cosmetic.

Sadly, the $100 Model 94 that used to permanently grace the rear window of lots of pickup trucks in rural America has now been relegated to history.  Too bad.  The gun that was described in the opening comment of this thread sounds like it was one of the typical ones that served us proudly and well for years.

Posted on another forum.
"Model 94 Winchesters (64-81 or 82) they made their receiver out of compacted sintered powdered metal which could not be blued in the standard fashion and had to use a special bluing process so it would "Stick" to the new receiver. It didn't work out as good as Winchester had planned."
