Old Johnsons & Evinrudes
« on: January 21, 2011, 07:28:36 PM »
In 1955 My father & I  went fishing at a camp in Ontario.  He borrowed a 5 1/2 Johnson from his brother.  It was the first of the green full gear shift models.  It ran perfect.  I bought one like it a couple years ago and although it's 56 years old, it starts cold on the second pull, and first pull the rest of the day.

I like the old coil ignition Johnsons.  As long as you keep good coils in them, and use good premix, they seem to run forever.  It's hard to find a worn out one because usually, eventually, they find an owner who can't afford to fix them when the coils finally do go south, then they sit unused for years until someone like me comes by to buy them. At least here in Wisconsin.

My father-n-law has a 1956 Evinrude 15 hp fastwin, do y'all know where I can get a free download shop manual for it? Its been sitting for bout 4 years and I want to change the lower unit oil and water pump, but I wont just rip it open since its not mine. I have found them online for sale $40.00 bucks but I was hoping someone might know where to download one. Thanks, Zeke

The warer pump is a pretty straight forward operation.  Remove the oval plate on the lower housing and you will see a shaft coupling.  You have to loosen the bolt you see there and when you remove the llower housing bolts the entire lower unit will slide off.  er......I think....haven't done it in almost 20 years.

Ask the guy you buy the impeller from.....that's what I did.  The impeller is the part you replace.  And gaskets. It's a star shaped rubber thing with a keyed metal hup that goes on a shaft.  It's about 3" dia. by 3/4" thick.

It was about a half hour job.
