Stumbled onto CR 45 LC Today
« on: January 18, 2011, 12:20:28 PM »
I stumbled onto one today at the rifle range I frequent as they have a gun shop also.

On the way out I visited with the couple who run it and got to looking at the guns as usual and they had one lone brand new 45 LC Buffalo Classic and I looked at the price and couldn't believe it.

It was marked $254, (Reg. Handi Rifle Price around here) and I told them I'd be back and pick it up or at least put it in layaway!

Why I didn't right then and there, I guess I had to go back and look it up to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Not to worry if they don't have it, CDNN still has them for $229.99 and $17 shipping.

Thanks Tim!    And I thought I was getting a heck of a deal?

Just kidding, because I think it's still a deal when you consider the cost of shipping and the FFL transfer fee I would probably break even or somewhere in the neighborhood.

Folks in my part of the country are proud of their FFL license, and one reason I've been hesitant on buying another receiver!

Yeah, I know whatcha mean, I got an FFL that only charges $20, so I consider myself lucky from the fees I've seen charged, it's the sales tax they add here that kills me tho.  :-\

Do they have to charge you tax there if you do the deal with the vendor, paying up front, and only ship to your FFL guy and you pay him the fee for the paper, etc.?
Just curious is all..........

It depends on the state where they are either located and where they are shipping it to I guess, and someone is going to get their share.

I've just about given up trying to piece a rifle together now since the barrels and receivers seems to have gone up as well as the FFL fees it's cheaper in my case to just buy a complete rifle locally when I can find one I like.

Washington state passed a law last year that requires tax to be charged on the sales amount when the FFL transfers firearms, really adds a bunch to the cost of frames and guns as Jim said.

I split this discussion off of the original discussion so we don't hijack it.

I couldn't stand it and went by and picked up the new inside the box 45 LC, and out the door for $280 which isn't the best price, but I've seen them marked over $400 and that's before tax etc.  I really like the black walnut stock and the pattern of the wood grain is really nice on mine, so that's a bonus I wasn't counting on!

Anyway I cleaned her up really good when I got home just using a bore brush and Hopps #9 and then a lightly oiled patch and I headed to the ranch this morning with a box of Winchester Super X in 255 grain lead rnd nose.

Placed the target at 50 paces and after four shots had her sighted in hitting an inch and a half or there abouts with my old eyesight and the stock open sights.

To tell you the truth I thought I would have trouble with the factory sights, but they were actually pretty good and gave me no problem with just my normal blurred vision!

One of the reasons I bought it was the compactness and simplicity and that is what I prefer to keep.

I'm really impressed and pleasantly surprised with the accuracy and the mildness of the recoil, and especially of the quiet report of the little 45.

It is just a fun gun to shoot, and that little chubby round should put some serious hurt on some feral pigs this weekend!

It's going to be even more fun when I get all my stuff together to do some hand loads for it!

Being able to see the wood you will be getting on your purchase is worth something. Sounds to me like you did pretty good.    As you have already discovered, these guns are just plain fun.

You did OK, in price and in accuracy! I have seen one at a gun show here last fall for that $400 also (dream on), so it was not to be for me.
The open sights are a great thing on a rifle like this, and help put the 'kid' back in us. Having the D/T for the scope rail is a plus if we want to find out how really accurate it is or our eyes are just too bad. The best of both worlds.
Now if they would give us the option of it in .45 or .357 Mag OR even Maxi !!!

I would take pallet wood any day over plastic, and laminates are a nice touch, but you just can't beat genuine American black Walnut.   It's the only wood that in my opinion has a soul,(analogy) and not two are alike.   It's just meant to be used as a gun stock.

I'm determined to keep this one as is and resist the temptation to put a scope on it.   It's easy if you have other Handi's and all mine have a distinct purpose, and with it being basically a close range powerful pistol caliber, I really don't see a need for scoping it.

I had a .357 mag that I reamed to maximum and it was a one holer, and regretably I sold it a while back and I've kicked myself ever since, and it's one of the reasons I bought the 45.   I don't know if it's just that I miss the .357 so much or I'm really liking this .45 Colt, and having only shot it on it's first outing, I'm real excited about this little gun and it's potential.

Another thing about this gun that I thought was kind of cool is it was produced in 2008 out of the old Gardner plant being one of their last production rifles.
