7x30 JDJ Contender
« on: January 18, 2011, 02:56:14 AM »
I am curious if anyone is shooting a 7x30 JDJ (aka 7-30 Waters Improved)? I have a T/C Custom Shop 7-30 Waters and have been considering sending it to SSK for a rechamber to 7x30 JDJ.

From the limited load data SSK provided me it appears as though the 7x30 JDJ will shoot a 139/140 grain bullet to the same muzzle velocity as the 7-30 Waters shoots a 120 grain bullet.

Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Larry,

That's one of the few JDJ's for the Contender that I never owned since my 7 Super Bower covered anything it could do and a lot more.   But you already have the "meat" of the answer with an improved case.   They'll shoot the same weight bullets with more horsepower behind them to extend the effective range with those bullets over the parent case, usually improve accuracy at all ranges by shooting those bullets flatter, allow you to shoot heavier bullets effectively than you might normally shoot in the parent case and usually extends brass life.   Lots of advantages for a few extra grains of powder and a cheap set of dies if any of those advantages are worth the price of admission to you for your types of shooting/hunting.

IMO - YMMV

Thanks Larry, I am hopefully assuming you are doing better since you are up and around at your computer. I really do wish you all the best and hope things get better for you.

I was actually considering the 7x30JDJ or the 7mm JDJ #2. I just this morning received an e-mail from JD stating he does not stock dies for the 7mm JDJ #2 anylonger, and basically said the same thing that the 7x30 JDJ will achieve the same velocities with the 139-140 grain bullets that the 7-30 Waters does with 120gr. Bullets. Looks like it'll cost $170.00 plus shipping for the rechamber and dies.

The less than $70 for the dies is pretty cheap for a wildcat, helped along because you don't need any very expensive form dies for this cartidge.    I still remember paying as much as $400/per set many, many years ago for custom form die sets for some of my wildcats.

I had a 7mm JDJ #2 at one time and really liked it. JD's data indicates the 7-30 JDJ will match or perhaps slightly exceed it so yeah it should do well for you. I mostly used the Sierra 130 SSP bullet in it same as I did in my 7-30 Waters but did use some Nosler 140 BTs as well. It's a nice step up in performance to be able to push the 140s to same velocity as 120s from the 7-30.

Thanks again guys. Now I just need to quite spending $$$ on everything else and get it sent off to SSK. Just picked up a used 2x7x32mm Burris LER Handgun Scope for that particular barrel so I am getting it set up.

I have thought of doing a similiar rechamber. How does the 7x30 JDJ compare to the 7 GNR by Gary Reeder?

I have not seen the load data for the 7mm GNR so I am not sure what the difference would be. JD did email me some data for 3 bullet weights for the 7x30 JDJ though. I am thinking I am going to go with the JDJ version as I have had SSK Barrels and a Factory Barrel rechambered by SSK and their work is top notch in my opinion.

With the load data you were given what velocity will that chambering give with 130 and 140 grain bullets?

The data I received shows 2 powders with each bullet weight, W-760 & IMR-4350. Maximum velocity is shown with W-760 @ 2520 FPS with 120gr. Hornady, 2523 FPS with 130gr. Sierra and 2509 FPS with 139gr. Hornady. IMR-4350 shows about 100 FPS less than W-760.

Good velocity with the heaiver bullets. I think I will send my barrel to SSK as well for the rechamber.  I have a 375JDJ that is an excellent shooter.

Yep if those velocities are possible with the 139-140 grain bullets that would be quite a boost in downrange performance. I am also going to send my barrel off to SSK in the not to distant future.

I'd love to hear more about the 7x30 JDJ and if anyone has gone ahead and rechambered there waters  . I'm currently working up loads for a 23'' contender carbine in the 7x30 waters . The bbl. just loves the nosler BT in 140 gr. with 30 grs. of H4895 it should be in the 2300 fps range . Haven't had the chance to hunt with it yet and don't have much confidence in it  after hearing a few negative reports . As far as using the 120 gr. bullets they just weren't as accurate as the 140 gr and with the longer bbl I figured the 140 would be ok . I like the idea of the added speed of the JDJ version and was wondering how you guys made out with it .

I'd like to hear about this conversion as well.  This is the first that I've heard of it.

I never did send my barrel in to be rechambered. In the end I decided to go a different route and went with a .30-30 AI Barrel.
