opinions on a .270 WSM rifle?
« on: December 15, 2003, 08:08:51 PM »
Here we go again!
I've got the itch to add a rifle to the guncase. I have mostly fine quality wood stocked rifles and I love em all... .300 WBY, 7 Mag Sako SS/Dlx, 30.06 Sako Custom Dlx, etc....
What I don't have is an all weather...rain, sleet, snow, all purpose hunting rifle, in Syn/SS and I have decided on a .270 WSM.
Question is which rifle? New Tikkas are nearly impossible to get up here in the UP, especially in the Short Mags.
I am leaning toward Browning or Winchester (Remington doesn't have that caliber). Any opinions or experiences out there with the .270 WSM?

I haven't shot one, but here is a rather extensive review:

The writer thinks pretty highly of the winchester setup

Actually, Remington has introduced the Model 700 SPS, which is only available in 270 WSM.  It is new so there won't be a lot of them around at first.  Have a look at it in the "what's new" section at www.remington.com

Other than that, since I dislike Browning rifles with a passion, I would would go Winchester.  Be careful though, most Winnies I have looked at over the past few years have not been well made or finished.  One had an action that would barely open.  When it did, it felt like they used heavy sand paper to finish the inside metal.  Another Winnie I looked at had paint brush fibres stuck in the finish on the wood stock and it was right near grip for all to see and feel.  I was not impressed.  Furthermore, I have had mechanical trouble with the few Winnies I have owned...one had the irritating desire to open the latch on the floorplate whenever I cycled the action.  Another was a poor shooter.   :(

If you can't afford a Sako 75 SS, the other route would be a Tikka.  They aren't the most attractive firearm I have seen but they do shoot well.

I have the .270 WSM in the Winchester M70 Classic Stainless.

As for the cartridge, it's kinda cool.  It has a bit more punch than a regular .270, but I yet don't know if it's "performance" on game as I have not yet hunted with it.

As for the rifle, it's pretty accurate.  I would say about an inch at 100 yards.  My major complaint is with the factory synthetic stock - which is junk - like most factory plastic stocks.  I will likely buy a McMillan or HS stock in the future, have it pillar and have the action glass bedded with the barrel free floated.  Then I'll have a trigger job with the pull set at about 2.5 pounds.  The only other thing that I might do is have the action polished to make it smoother.

Granted, this is quite a bit of customized work, but, in my opinion, is worth the money.

Keep in mind that, since Browning and Winchester are owned by the same parent company, I believe that their synthetic stocks are essentially the same.

As for the Tikka T3, I wouldn't get it in any WSM because the action is a long action.

You may also want to consider HOWA - I think that they now offer the .270 WSM in a synthetic stainless model - although I would still get an after market stock.

This is what Sierra Infinity 5thEd. CD has to say about it:

Powder choices for the SAUM are going to cover the same range as those suitable for the 7mm Remington magnum. Slow-burning numbers that have traditionally been favored for the earlier 7mm and 300 magnums will also find a home in the 7mm SAUM. Bullet selection, as with the other SAUM and WSM designs, requires some forethought. Because of the overall length restrictions inherent with these cartridges, most of the heavier bullet weights are not well suited to this application. The problem, as with the other members of this type of cartridge configuration, is the reduction in powder capacity and the resulting loss of velocity. With the 140 to 150 grain bullets for which it was intended, the 7mm SAUM is a tough proposition to beat.

I don't look to Remington to follow suit in this caliber.  I think that they will go with either the .280 Remington or even Winchester's .284.  Of the two, I would suggest that they would have a trump card in the hole by taking the .284 and working with it.  The next  step up has already been done in the 7mm XYZ cartridge even though they are both a 7mm or .284".  To me this would crowd the 270SWM out since there next step is the 7mm Shooting Western,(I believe that is the name of that cartridge, please correct if name is incorrect).

try looking at the winchester super shadow 6 lbs. synthetic good accuracy out of the box 1inch at 100 yards.  Best yet they are under $400 and the round really messes up the insides of a deer.  They drop like a rock.
