Looking for mild load for 458 Win with 500gr cast
« on: January 05, 2011, 10:08:19 AM »
Can't seem to find any suitable load data for 500 grain cast bullet for 458 Win.  Looking for a mild load in the 1400 to 1500 fps range.  Any ideas?

Thanks.

I couldn't find this data either but extrapolated loads from the data I could find.

I use 41 grains of AR2207 (equivalent to IMR4198) behind a 500gn cast for about 1600fps (ME equivalent to 308Win). I think you can go down to about 38 grains for around 1400fps.

I've just returned from hunting having used these very loads and here's some of the results:

And heres the results for a 1000fps 405gn lead load (ie subsonic):

Excellent on the rabbit!

I wonder if there is an equivalent load at about 1500 using IMR4198, 4064, 3031 or Rel7?  I just happen to have these now.

Thanks.

IMR4198 is equivalent to Reloader 7, and equivalent to the AR2207 that I've been using.

I think that IMR3031 and IMR4064 would be too slow for this projectile.

(Edit: I just found some limited info that I had in a spreadsheet. Have a look at the Castboolit website - there is a load for 500gn using 4895 for about 1500fps - I didn't record the powder weight).

Check out Lyman's Cast Bullet Handbook and/or try mid-load 45-70 data for the bullet weight of choice. Note that nowdays there are 3 levels of 45-70 data, 'Trapdoor' Springfield, Marlin Levergun, Ruger No.1.

Have you tried Trail Boss?
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

Actually, I've looked at Trailboss for the 500gns but haven't tried it. Velocity is only supposed to be 800 to 900 fps - might be a bit too slow. Another rabbit load? :D

Try 33.0-36.0 gr. IMR 4227 for the speed range you desire. No fillers. 20KSI to 25KSI. Nice easy shooting load, about like a full loaded 45-70.

Is that puffy TB load based on the 70% of a full case? You can fill to bullet base, no compression though or I understand pressures can get spikey. From what Ive seen the data doesnt give full load density velocities.
Ive been messing with it and so far am liking it for moderate loads from 32-20 through 45-70.

39 to 41 grs Accurate 5744 will get you 1500 fps with a 500 gr cast bullet. It may burn a little dirty but it sure is accurate and this powder is made for big cases and is not position sensitive. I find that the use of Fed 215 primers makes it burn cleaner.

There's not too much difference in the TB load range or resulting velocities. For example, the recommended load range is between 18 and 21 grains behind the 405gn lead 458 projectile. The corresponding velocity range is supposed to be 1040 to 1080fps - not much difference. I settled on 20gns as the most accurate (I haven't crono'd it). I haven't checked how much space is left in the case, there is a gap and I would say it is less than 30% spare. I used published data and didn't do it from measuring case capacity under the projectile.

H4895 is the powder that Hodgdon recommends for reduced loads in rifles. Any max load of H4895 can be reduced as much as 40% and still get reliable ignition without any pressure spikes. Check out the write up in the Hodgdon youth loads.

IIRC in Hodgdon's own TB info they say that a full case to bullet base, uncompressed, is the the max load and will still be underpressure for the cartridge. The data at the level you looked at is for the reduced velo loads commonly used by 'recreational' shooters, and you know it is less than full, so there you go.

try 20-24 grains of 2400 and settle on what shoots the best. My #1 used to shoot moa with 500 rcbs bullets with 22 grains.

Good info.

FYI - I found the H4895 could widen groups as the charge drops towards 60%.  Ignition seemed slightly erratic, causing clear vertical stringing of shots on more than one occasion (I think in the 65% to 70% range).  Others don't seem to complain though.

The rcbs cast bullet manual has loads for the 458 Win mag with 500gr cast.  SR4759 40 grains 1566 fps 42 grains 1659 fps.  Another powder is 2400  28 grains 1281 fps and 30 grains 1377 fps.  I have noticed some of the older manuals giving lighter loads than some of the newer ones ie nosler #4 and nosler #6.  If you like I could take a picture of the page and send it to you.

Good luck,

I just shot my first round of handloads, H322, 60 grs with 460 gas checked lead. (+ - 1900 fps)  No leading, but Mohammed Ali recoil. :P

Going down to 40-45 Grs. The case is still 75 % full because of the long bullet in the case.

I had the same experience with H4895 in a 45-120 with 525 grain postels & 400 grn. LRNGCs.  The only way I could get consistent ignition with reduced charges was to crimp the bullet really, really tight.  Good for ignition, not so good for the bullet and the subsequent accuracy.  Finally started loading the bullet into the lands w/o a crimp and first results are promising, we shall see.

Shot the Cast Performance 460 GC with 40 grs H322. Like a 35 Whelen.  That will be my Stateside load,  ::) (not going anywhere else) very accurate at 100yds.
