Scope base ?? for a 17HMR (UPDATE)
« on: December 31, 2010, 02:52:38 PM »
I picked up a 24" 17HMR and cannot find out which scope base I need. Everything I can find is rounded on the bottom not flat. What scope base do I need? Thanks

Is this on an Encore, or Contender?

Either one will be rounded on the bottom and not flat. Why do you think you need a flat bottomed base?

The radius of the Encore barrel is different than the radius of the Contender. The 2 mounts look the same, but are not. I believe even the hole spacing is the same?

If it is a Contender there is no difference between a handgun base and a rifle base.  I don't know about Encores.  And the 17HMR uses the same mount as any other.

There is no difference between rifle and handgun bases for the Contender.  The same goes for the Encore.  The Encore does, of course, take a different base than the Contender.  I use Warne Weaver style bases in my Encore and Contender rifle barrels and put the scopes in Warne QD rings which makes for easy scope changing.

I took a look at the barrel again and it is made by Thompson. The top of the "breech" is flat. There are 4 holes for screws with filler plegs. It also has a set of open sights on it. If I could figure out how to post pics I would.

Huh, this is really curious now...

Are you SURE it's for a Contender, or Encore? And can you tell us which of the 2?

Also, if you email me your pics, I can post them up to the forum for you, then we can all see what you have, and maybe give you good info. on where to go from here.

I've never seen or even heard of such an animal in Contender.  Yep, pictures are needed on this one.

I tried to find a better picture of the monoblock barrel of the encore 17 HMR barrels, But this is the best I could find.

If you look at the picture is that like what you have? Of course yours may be blued.

Hey, well there ya go. Problem solved. I hadn't seen the Encore rimfire barrel before now. Interesting way to make it work. I only have Contenders, so I didn't have to deal with that issue in the Encore.

First of all, Thanks for all the information. Do you think anybody else other than TC makes a base for this barrel? There is a show this weekend so I am going to check out the vendors to see if anyone has one.

Well it looks like TC is the only maker for this base so I bought a standard Encore scope mount and ground and filed it flat, mounted it and went out to shoot it today. Works great. I know it isnt the best setup but it will work untill I get the right base for it. The gun shoots better than the NEF I had.
