new guy to trapping

ok i got a few ?...i am wanting to get into trapping i live in middleTN and there a lot of coon and a few fox in my area..would snares or foot traps be the best to start with? what things do i need to start? and could yall give me the names of some books or dvd so i could see what to look for in sets and areas.there is a large lake 5 miles from my house so some water set would be easy to get to. all the land around it is gov land so its all public use..is public land worth fooling with? oh and the lake has lots of bevear by the way.....any info would really help....thanks clint

Your best bet is to contact your state DNR and find out what your allowed to trap on the state property. If you have never trapped before you need to get some good books. One place to start would be to look on ebay. You will find just about any kind of book on there for the animals you want to trap. I would use foothold traps and learn to use them before trying to hang snares. 1 1/2 coils for coon and fox and #3's and bigger for beaver.

im am trying to learn to trap coyotes with snares  as of today i still have not got one.there is lots for me to learn before i will get one i am sure. i seen where 1 walked to a set  and then walked around it. im sure it knew that something was just not right. but sooner or later i will find a dumb one i hope. good luck with trapping

Looks like I am in good company here.

Had two coyotes walk up to two seperate snares and just go around them.  I think, I may have had them set to small or had created to narrow of funnel for them.

Maybe get out Sunday after this blizzard blows thru and do a couple sets.
