45-70 and pointed bullets

Since the Handi's are single shot this would seem the perfect setup to experiment with pointed bullets in the old war horse. What has your experience been? What bullets have you all tried? What seems to work what doesn't? What has produced the most accuracy for you? Your knowledge is much appreciated thanks everyone.

They work fine on targets from my Ultra Hunter!!  ;D

I shoot the Hornady Leverevolutions all the time. Velocity is 2000 fps accuracy is very good.

I shoot the Hornady LE in one of my 45-70s and accuracy is about what you see in quicks picture.

Shooting pointy bullets out of a 45-70 is like putting a hood scoop on an AMC Pacer.... it just don't belong there.

That big 500 grain postell bullet is close to pointy.

I do believe I have seen a Pacer with a hood scoop when I lived in the city.

The 45-70 really shines on game with the big heavy wide metplat bullets.

Unless you varmint hunt with your 45-70. ;)

I've experimented with making "flex tips" out of hot glue for my 300gr JHPs that I've hogged out to 250-260grs.   I gain a bit more range and less wind deflection at the near same velocities as a hogged out bullet without a tip.
