Yesterday was opening day for beaver in this fine state of Ohio. Got only two 330 out  due to a lack of population and super thick ice. Also threw some snares out for coyote and snatched a bowfin from some open ice.

Day two of beaver trapping, two 330's out still. Caught beaver #2 this time in a run. No bait. He's half the size of the first beaver which tells me there might be a colony there, which can be 4+, at least thats what I've read.
Also at the den entrance I pulled up what I thought was a snapped trap but it had a muskrat in it...is this an occurance that happens often? Do beavers and muskrat share the lodge? Thought that was interesting. Hope to set a differnt lodge this weekend if not sooner because of the warm weather thats headed our way.

ive never caught a rat in a 330 but ive seen a few pics of other people catching them..a guy i know in ky catches them in cdr's and they have bout 3 lbs of pan tension..i would call the dnr guy in oh. and send him a pic of the rack and get a permit and sale it on ebay..i traped central ohio for a couple years caught lots of coon.and a few rats

Nice pics and you are getting  broken in on winter trapping.   Do you clean skin your bvr.

i got some new snares and would like to set them. any help on how to get them ready to use as far as scent control or any think i should do to them to make them more effective.

Kristen, what part of the state are you in? I'm in southern Ohio and the ice down here isn't 2 inches thick. We can't get out to lodges or feed piles because of the thin ice. Its only going to get worse with the warm weather thats coming in.

I sure wish Ohio officials would use more sense in deciding when beaver season comes in.  Just across the river in good old WV the beaver season has been in since the beginning of November.

thats like with the otter here across the river 150 feet in ky your allowed 6 on the w.va side were not allowed any

Congrats Kristen..... We trap them here, year round. The fur does not bring too much here, but they are such a problem, a source of income from landowners wanting them gone.

Ron, if you use them for beaver, there is not much to do.... others critters, you can boil them in baking soda, and use gloves if after K-9s. The soda will knock the shine off of them enough, but some of the treatments will slow them down.

fishdaddy I have such respect for the WV system.   I am not sure why they are holding back in allowing otter trapping.   There are some WV trappers who post on the WVTA website who trap both sides of the OHIO river without having an Ohio license or mandated permission to trap.   I wonder what they do when they catch otter?

next year we will have a season with a limit of one.i think they should have the limit fit the area like in my area we should be allowed 3 and parts of the state that dont have many 1.i see them a lot in the river
