Let's talk 22 hornet
« on: December 24, 2010, 02:04:48 PM »
I want another 22hornet. My last one was a Brno. Very accurate. I also have owned a 7722hornet, a micro medialian, and years ago a Winchester 43 in hornet.

What you guys have and would recommend.

pastorp, I have only owned one Hornet and I still have it..it is a Browning..It is one of my favorites..as my stuff grows, each one gets used a bit less..but this one is very accurate...it probably would never be sold..but lately, I have been using my my CZ .22 magnum...but the CZ rifles have impressed me also..good luck in your search...what do you use yours for..it seems to me I remember you live or lived in Alaska...

It's legal for deer here in Alaska. But mostly just plinking. And some small game like grouse, with head shots.

I shoot deer with my Hornet. 45gr. bullets through the lungs does it every time. I had a Ruger 7722 Hornet that shot excellent. I now have a H&R Hornet that shoots excellent. If I bought another bolt gun Hornet I'd get a CZ.

I might try a h&r. I'm getting interested in them. Spanky you say yours shoots good. Ever shoot it for group? Factory or reloads?

My H&R Hornet is shooting in the 3/8" range @ 100 now with my hand loads , fractory Rem does about the same and the Hornady stuff does around 3/4" , these are with 35g bullets , the 40 and 45 grain stuff is in the 1" or just under area .

The worst group I've shot with it could probably be covered with a silver dollar and the best could be covered with a dime. Remington ammo shoots the best in mine and Winchester shoots the worst. Cheap Privi Partisan ammo shoots almost as well as Remington.
The gun shoots well enough that I should probably put a decent glass on top of it. I'm using a 4x Bushnell on it right now. :-[

My first Hornet was a CZ 527FS, still have it, wonderful accuracy and curb appeal. Next were
some TCs, 12"G2 pistol and 20" custom shop carbine barrel. Next up was a 24" Encore barrel.
are all still living here and will as long as I'm alive. They are, without exception, accurate, fun
and inexpensive to load for and shoot.

My Brno was a fox model if I remember right. That model looked just like the cz 527 lux. And was wonderfully accurate. With s&b factory it would shoot dime size groups. But like so many I let it slip away.  ::). I think a cz 527 might be my first choice but then I like single shots too.

How heavy are the h&r single shots?

My Brno fox had the spoon bolt handle. But like yours east bank it had the double set triggers. I had a burrs 6x target compact scope with the dot reticule in it. Nice setup. The Brno preferred the selier& belloit.45gr soft point load.

I had a cz 527 in 223 later that had a single set trigger. I used a swift 6x riflescope on it. I shot lots of wolf 223 55gr HP ammo in it but the preferred load was the Winchester white box 45gr HP load. Dime size groups with the Winchester white box ammo. Little tinny groups make me  ;D .

With a scope mine runs at around 6 1/2 pounds , I can carry it all day and not have a problem .

13 grains of lil gun and either a 34 grain Midsouth varmint nightmare, or 35 grain vmax. Thats all we need to talk about.

I'd recommend the C-Z or the Browning Micro; I've owned the former and have never heard any negatives about the latter; did also have a Savage 40 (shot well but no magazine.) Would definitely check out the new Savage Model 25 repeater in .22 Hornet, allegedly much-improved, e.g. the bolt.

I have two  Hornets, a Savage model 40 that uses jacketed bullets only. My advice is Lil Gun and 35-45 gr bullet with 12-13 gr LG and small pistol primer. My Savage will shoot sub 1/2 moa groups all day @ 100 yds if the wind cooperates, Tweak to your guns likes an enjoy !  My other  Hornet is a 12 twist Handi rifle that shoots only cast boolits. Each rifle has its own delegated brass BTW. The Handi  likes any of the five different boolits that I cast and I've found that AA1680 powder works best.  As an aside they all shoot to very near identical POI @ 100 yds. Cast boolits are very much fun to play with and give you  much more versatility.  The Cast Boolit site on the net can give the newcomer all the imformation about cast boolits in just about any Hornet you could buy, somebody there has it and loads for it, can answer almost any question you might have. We love to share loads and imformation, check it out.

I have a TCR barrel in the hornet but would like a bolt gun.  I'm a lefty so it looks like it's either a Browning or a Cooper.

I have had two hornets.  One was a Sako the other a Kimber.  I was  never able to get consistant accuracy out of either, although the Sako was much superior to the Kimber.  Groups ran in the 2 inch class, with some very good ones mixed in.  The Kimber was when they first started on the West Coast.  The chamber had excessive headspace, and the bolt handle fell off,  not good for a high end rifle.  I would look at a CZ, but my 222 shoots circles around the hornet.

My shooting buddy had one of the early Kimber of Oregon hornets and he also had headspace issues, we thought that the action had some spring in it as it was based on the 22 rimfire action. I've got a 1730 Anschutz hornet and have had no problems withe either accuracy or brass life.......some brass is on it's 14th loading. It's got a 1 in 16  twist so bullet selection is more limited. 30 grain varmint grenades and 35 grain v max shoot fine, but 30 and 35 grain Bergers shoot minute of backstock.

Hi Guys,
and all Savage M40 and Anschutz 1730 owners and shooters.

I've had my M40 for a couple years now, and very pleased with it's accuracy.
Was the most consistent hornet that I've ever seen.

I've just bought a new Anschutz 1730D sporter, which has a medium contour barrel and 5 shot clip,
and it's also a great shooter, as you would expect from Anschutz.
I already have a 1742D .222 and 1712FWT .22rf that I can't fault.

I've lightened my trigger springs with J&P versions around the 12/14ozs mark, and this helps my accuracy and grouping.

My favourite load for both is a Nosler 40gr Ballistic Tip over 13grs Lil'gun and small pistol primer.

Here's what they can do;
(The M40 trigger pull weight is around 2.5lbs, which is a bit heavier than I would like for bench shooting,
but with a bit of perseverance, I can manage,
but it does tend to give me a bit of horizontal spread in my groups.)

Savage M40, 5 shots at 200mtrs;

Only fired a few 3 shot groups with the Anschutz at 100mtrs so far, to try and better the Test Target that came with the rifle;
This one beat it hands down !

cheers,
and good shooting !

Nice shooting from an excellent rifle.  I have been unable to find a lefty Anschutz in the hornet :(.  I believe the Cooper is a single shot but the browning is magazine fed.  Another alternative is the NULA (ultralight arms) but they are really pricy.

Passed on a nice Ruger laminate/stainless last week at the gun show.  $475 was the asking price.  HAd just purchased a #1 in .280 Rem the week before or the .22 Hornet would ahve come home with me.

I traded a stainless/laminate Ruger Hornet for a CZ 527 Varmint .204 Ruger. To be honest-I wish I had the Hornet back :(

That Ruger was a shooter. 12 grains of Lil Gun, 40 grain Vmax and a W-W standard small pistol primer would shoot the occasional sun 1/4" moa 3 shot group. Average was around 1/2" moa. In fact that gun would shoot just about any bullet 40 grains and under with great results and would use just about any small primer I had on hand without complaint

The .204 is ok I guess but it is  damn finicky. It only likes 1 load-25.6 grs Benchmark with a 30 grain Sierra Blitz King and ONLY with an R-P 7-1/2 Benchrest primer any other primer and that load opens way up. It doesnt like to be too clean but it doesnt like to be too dirty either. On a freshly cleaned barrel it seems like it takes about 10 fouling shots to settle back into the sweet spot then shots 10-30 groups are tight. after shot 30 it starts to open back up and the barrel needs cleaned and the whole cycle starts over. I really miss the care free .22 Hornet and only needing to clean the barrel once a woodchuck season.

I am really thinking about trading it on another Hornet or maybe a .222
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

The 14 inch contenders are great too :D  Just went to the range for some pre super bowl entertainment and load work up.  This was the only 3 shot group at 100 with this weapon as I was working up loads for something else.  This gun shoots groups like this and better all day long ;D  Can't wait for PD season to start;D
