308 Ultra dropped one this evening!
« on: December 23, 2010, 06:23:54 PM »
Well the story starts by me taking my son and his cousin on their first hunt ever. We had a family day and I had promised to take my 8yr old nephew hunting for his first time, my son said he wanted to go also (he has never wanted to go or showed any interest before)  :o. We get into the box blind around 2:30 and fire up the buddy heater to knock the chill off and they begin to talk and play the nintendo. I had to remind them a few times to be quite but they didn't mind. I had planned on shooting anything to get some meat and after it being 20 degrees and the wind blowing 25-50 mph I was tickled to see a deer appear along the field edge. I told the boys to look and after helping them to spot it I put the range finder on it and it was 265 yds. We watched it for nearly 20 minutes and with the light fading I told them to put their muffs on and get ready. I took careful aim on the front shoulder and squeezed off, the deer dropped instantly with no movement. The ultra did it's job well and being the first deer shot with it I couldn't be happier  ;D. I think this will be my new go to deer rifle and the 168gr A-Max worked awesome with an exit hole on the opposite shoulder about the size of a half dollar.

Way to go Rj 1
Great story, thanks for sharing it with us!
I bet the boys were really excited about the hunt, maybe this will inspire yours to want to go again.
That was a great shot with the 308 Ultra, especially with all the wind we had today.
Hope you and yours have a very Merry Christmas!

GOOD SHOOTING!

Thanks Slufoot! I hope it may change Noah's thinking, it was a step in the right direction for him even wanting to go. The shot could not have been better for my purpose because of the wind and cold and two young boys (No tracking, no suffering for the deer or us). When the trigger broke you could actually hear the bullet hit the deer. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

That was great taking the boys out.  Ya done good.  My .308, sorry to say is not a Handi, it's a Ruger.  Shooting 168 gr. Winchesters Ballistic Tips it has made more one shot deer kills than any other rifle I own.....and I mean dead right there not running off.  It has taken deer, fox and coyote all at over 300 yards and as close as ten feet.  It is a superb caliber and excellent bullet weight.  I read years ago that the 168 gr. was the ultimate for accuracy in the .308.  I went there and never left.

Merry Christmas,

Pete

Congrats! My son didn't show much interest in small game hunting, Deer hunting is another story. This is his second year and he took his second buck.

There seems to be quite a bit of controversy about using A-Max target bullets for big game hunting. I'm glad it ended with a humane kill.

Congrats, Dinny
