Ruger 45 LC loading in H&R Handi (?)
« on: December 14, 2010, 11:47:00 PM »
I have acquired my third Handi-rifle.  This one is chambered for 45 LC.  Sweet little carbine.  Short, light weight, open sights, drilled and tapped for a scope, good color in the wooden stock, and I like it.

It will be the companion for my Ruger Super Blackhawk convertible between 45ACP and 45LC.  My loadings for the Blackhawk are in accordance with the upper end of the published charges with Unique powder.

Will these hotter than most LC loads be acceptable in the Handi?

=====================================================================================
[LATE NOTE]....I did some "prospecting" on this forum, like I should have done in the first place, and wouldn't you know it!  There are a whole LOT of posts in regard to the 45LC and all of them favorable in regard to Ruger ("+P" and greater) loading.

I am going to need another safe...

I've got the same setup, and haven't found a load that the Ruger will handle that the Handi won't.  Actually, folks have punched it out to .460 S&W with no problems.
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." "Mother Gue", I says "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world," and by God, I was right. Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline

Yeah, Tim is one of them.  Mine's gonna be a .454 or a .460.  Haven't made up my mind yet.  I might just keep the one I have as it is and buy another to ream.

As long as some of these throats already are, rather than reaming, how about using as long and heavy a bullet as you can get in that throat and bumping the charge up (carefuly!, bit by bit).
I kinda think I would hit my threshhold before the gun will anyway. I have a 340 gr. mould that throws a .453 dia. bullet that should be dandy.....just dont have the carbine to try it.
I know.....lots of you guys would be 'glad' to try it for me.....heres an idea, send me your carbine!

Here's a start...I'll show you mine (below).  Now you show me yours.  Maybe we'll get them together some day.  I would be interested in some of those 340 gr boolets if they are not too dear from which for you to part.  I will pay for them and shipping if we can work something out.  Let me know which mould as I have just started smelting lead.

Its an NEI dbl. cav.#320-451 (check their website), it may be a 'pistol' bullet but I use it for my Parker Hale Volunteer small bore for 'close range'. In spite of the numbers it weighs 340ish gr. and goes .453 (depending on the alloy used; I use soft to WWts), and has a flat point (now aint that an oxymoron, a 'flat'...'point').
I do have to cast some up one of these days.

I'm pushing a 360g Laser cast 1500fps with no signs of problems. That's enough for me. Kurt
