.35 caliber Handi Rifles

Guys forgive me for these questions, but I've been out of the Handi loop for a while. Last I heard they were producing .35 Whelen's again after a shut down on them due to mis-fire issues. Did they also offer the .35 Remington at this time, and are they still offering these calibers and any other .35 cal other than .357? How about accessory barrels? Thanks!

Neither the 35 Whelen or the 35 Remington are listed on the H&R website, but they're both available, just a matter of finding them, Bud's has had the Whelen in stock in three models, wood, new style synthetic monte carlo and Handi-grip, the 35 Rem seems to only be available in southern markets, it has the new style syn camo stock, same as Dick's Sporting Goods rifles. H&R has issued a service notice on for misfires, they're replacing the transfer bar with an upgraded version.

A buddy of mine almost wrapped his .35 whelen around a tree Saturday morning.  11 point in the scope and the thing misfired!  He shucked the shell and reloaded and BANG, one dead deer.  That was his second whelen.  He now owns a .444 handi.  I am about to get a 45/70 or .444.

Scatterbrain, I'm lookin at yer avatar.  I could go out and sit on my back porch like that now.  The only problem is I'd be stuck frozen to the chair in half a minute.

The .357 is so versatile and reliable, I haven't a clue why anyone would want more.  The Maxi will do just about all the .35 Rem will do.  The .45-70, '06, etc will do what the Whelen is supposed to do......when it works.

I've got too much to do in my old age to get tangled up with problem calibers.

That's not quite true Pete if you mean the Maxi, try and find 357 Maxi ammo at your local well stocked sporting goods store!!  ::) For a handloader, an SB2 35 Remington Handi will do a LOT more than the 357Maxi in any way, shape or form, there's just no way for the Maxi to get close in the little Maxi case, 180gr at 2200fps in the Maxi vs 2450fps in the 35 Rem, there's a big difference in case capacity, as the old saying goes, there's no replacement for displacement!  ;D

Yesterday I was checking Lee Reloading maximum pressures of 35 cal cartridges to get an idea of what would be a safe 357 Mag rechamber.

357 Mag (45k CUP)
357 Max (46.9k CUP)
35 Remington (35k CUP)
356 Win (46.6k CUP)
358 Win (52k CUP)

Keep in mind the 357Mag comes on an SB1 frame, the larger case head of the .35 Rem and up make the SB1 unsuitable for those rechambers, that's why the 35 Rem Handi comes on an SB2 frame.  ;)

Dont forget,ya can load 357 pistel bullets in the 35 Rem.They shoot REAL good in my Marlin.I' groups with 125s and up to 180s.Brings a hole new speed thing also.pan.

So I would buy my 35 Rem first then have a 357 barrel fitted and rechambered to whatever I wanted. That sounds like a better proposition, just adding 35cal barrels till I have them all. Perfect solution for any Handiholic. (There you go again Tim!!! ;D)

i  just got  my 35 REMINGTON.....last week

my first ''real'' gun was a 35 rem
don't know  why i was so excited about this gun...maybe thats why
i thew  a scope on it that night and bore sighted it  shot it the next day
first shot 40 yards   DEAD ON
2 more shots at 80 yards......4 inches low one inch right
neighbors came out so i quit....hahaha

one  light strike on one primer...but  all  three  went  off...no misfires  so far

why do they even bother with the sb1 frames??????

just  buy a 45-70  and send in the frame  for five   357 mag barrels
then rechaber at will
