My new 45/70 Carbine
« on: November 28, 2010, 03:50:18 AM »
Just finished putting my new barrel together.  This is a 45/70 Custom shop barrel I bought from another member here.  I put a Nikon Scope on it and used a set of TSOB rings I already had.  Looking forward to shooting it this week.  Will take some better pics and post from the range.  I bought a couple boxes of Lever evolution to try through it.

Nice looking. What loads you gonna use? Ihave a 18" 45/70 but aint shot it yet.  What does your rifle  weigh.  Mine is  less than 6lbs. So i'm going on the light side at first.

Nice looking rig there, a little tougher on the shoulder than those rimfires I bet!!  HAHA!!  I have a 375JDJ carbine I'm just getting set up, I still need to find a scope I like for it...have not shot it yet either..need to scope it and work up some rounds for it...hope it looks as good as yours when I get it done...

Thanks,  I took it to the range today and sighted it in.  I didn't detach a retina but man does this thing kick!  I will not be making any long range trips with this barrel let me tell you.  However I am sure anything I hit will be DRT for sure.  Will post some pics tomorrow.  Kinda late and the wife is fussing. ::)

I mean I won't be shooting this barrel a lot on a trip to the rifle range.  It is a great hunting gun but not something I want to shoot many times at a sitting.  I shot it 10 times yesterday to sight it in and that was all I wanted to shoot it.  I usually shoot a new barrel a lot when I first start shooting it to get the feeling of it.  Not this one, it kicks like a Mule.  I was shooting 325 Hornady LR bullets.  Very accurate out of this barrel if I don't flinch.

Ahhh... Ok that makes sense. I have a 45/70 in a 14 inch hunter barrel that I love, but its not the gun I want to shoot all day at the range.
  The one on the left...

shoot some standard factory 300gr or rem 405 especially isnt bad. Cast 405gr at around 1300fps doesnt kick much. 300gr cast with 10gr unique is very pleasant and quiet but still hits hard. A hard cast 405gr bullet at 1300-1500 fps will shoot through most animals no problem and from most any angle.
