fancy grips

im in the process of picking up a beautifully engraved ruger vaquero with a bob james action job
it has some decent looking polymer ivories on it with some schrimshaw work
but i want something extra special to put on it
im thinking either ivory or stag
i have never had a set of genuine ivories before
would love to have a carved set maybe with the ruger logo relief carved on it like an eagle butt colt grip
anyone know anyone who could do something like that?
or any extra nice grips
i have looked at nutmeg and ellen hunting
anyone else??

  Not big on ivory or stag myself so not much assistance there.  I can suggest that you consider a nice set of grips from hollywood.  Offers a nice appearance similar to that of ivory and a lower cost yet still allows carving/checkering, inserts, etc.   I probably won't be the first to suggest CacryC but Klamath River gets passed over yet does outstanding work with wood grips as well.

I don't have any first hand knowledge but have read that Esmeralda makes some beautiful grips.

Real ivory may be hard to get/  I know it was not importable a few years ago, and I haven't heard that embargo was lifted.

If you want absolutely georgous, I have a friend that has a set of giraffe bone grips on his AWA.  They are a rich, honey colored pair of grips, much like aged ivory but more translucent.  I would think they could be the ultimate grips for a gun.  Me?  I have to stick with stag.  It's the nicest I can afford and it is pretty durable for shooting.  (You ARE going to shoot this gun, right?)  44 Man

oh yes im gonna shoot it
i wouldnt have a gun i couldnt or wouldnt shoot
i have a tricked out vaquero now that carries a very nice set of stags on it
and wouldnt mind finding another set like them for this new gun which will probably never happen
i walked in on them being taken off a vaquero and the guy took 50 bucks for em!!!
btw the vaquero im getting has a bob james tuned action
so its definately gonna get shot alot lol

That's a beautiful gun!  And you sound as lucky as me!  My grips (2 sets of elk) were given to me off the 'old' vaqueros and have been on several guns over the years.  I put them on my old 44 Mag, then cut the nose off shorter and cut the relief for the lock on the 'new' Vaqueros and had them on that.  Then I reshaped them a little and installed them on a pair of SS Gaucho's.  Now they reside on a Colt and a blue Gaucho, so they have made the rounds for sure.  Your stag grips are beautiful!  Enjoy.  44 Man

My wife surprised me with Eagle's Elk grips for my SBH...and I have to say they really are about perfect for me...
They have worn very well, and fill my hand just right!

I replaced all of the grips on my 4 pairs of stainless Vaqueros with American Elk grips from Eagle Grips.  Not as dense as Sambar(?) stag but a nice second choice for a poor cowboy.  One word outstanding, ask for the darker bark you will not be disappointed.  Also, from Klamaith(?) River, a wood set in Holly would look like ivory from a distance.

I just got my new 'commissioned' set of Maple Burl grips for the 50th.An.BH. They are gorgeous!
Carl (privatescustomgrips.com) is a gentleman to work with and I am very satisfied. His prices are remarkably reasonable. He answered all my inquires and interpreted my desires perfectly.

That beautifully engraved gun certainly NEEDS to have grips perfectly fitted to your grip frame, regardless of what material you choose. "Universal fit" grips won't cut it.
