50 cal twist rate
« on: November 26, 2010, 03:26:20 PM »
Ok, what about 1:48 twist. If I am not mistaken, that is what TC Hawkins have. I can pick up a beautiful 50, Wesson style ML with a custom 32" 1:48 twist barrel. Am I stuck shooting patched balls or can I shoot conicals. Also with that twist how will I do at 300 yards assuming that I do my part? The rifle is a Craig Stolzer piece. I am not likely to hunt with it so punching paper would be my thing.
I came to the realization that 1000 yard shoots are for younger guys with better eys. Buying Gibbs would be a waste of money in that case. Even with glasses that really would be a stretch. However mid range would work with my eyes.
All your expert opinions are welcome!

My bad, it is Colin Stolzer and the barrel is just a tad shy of 29".

I have a 1-48 gun that shoots conical bullets....hornady great plains very well. I would use a full bore lead slug.

In .50 caliber the 48" twist is not ideal for either ball or bullet but will do OK for balls and short conical bullets. For long range work, and I call 300 yards long range, I think you'd do much better with the Gibbs. The short, fat .50 caliber conicals suitable for a 48" twist are good for hunting within 150 yards. They are not very aerodynamic, loose velocity quickly and are very sensitive to wind, not good bullets for precision shooting much past 100 yards. Some people have built pretty good midrange rifles by just putting a Green Mountain fast twist .45 caliber barrel on a Lyman or T/C rifle and adding good sights.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

Well I talked to Joe at Gun works who told me that they no longer have drop in barrels, much less in any
fast twist configurations.  Moreover, he suggested that I save up and buy a Gibbs or the Tryon Match.
My great idea went down in flames and I am back to what I wanted to do in the first place.
