Ruger model 77/5.7FN Based on the 77/22H
« on: November 14, 2010, 06:41:45 AM »
This is just a wish I have had for a while.

I would like to see Ruger to offer a small rifle in 5.7FN based on the Ruger 77/22H rifle.  That would make my favorite rifle for quiter shot to varmint and small game.  The other positive results on this would be the low cost of reloading and the longevity of the brass.

Any thoughts on this?

I agree. 5.7 FN would be an excellent varmint cartridge, and a good step between 22 Hornet and .222/.223REM.  Plus, it would match my 77/22 Hornet quite nicely...

Given the failure of a rifle my 77/22H was combined with the much higher pressures of 5.7x28 you'd have a surfired recipe for mediocre accuracy and brief case life.

In other words just like all the other centerfire chamberings do in rugers rimfire pretending to be a centerfire action. The ruger "hornet" action is a joke and for darn sure has no buisness being chambered for a 55k psi round.

OK Krochus....I'm confused....what exactly are you describing????  Are you suggesting that the 77/22H action has an issue???  No dog in this at all...just trying to understand a bit more.....

Yes my 77/22H "target" was at best a 4moa rifle

The action is the same used on the rimfires where you have a rear locking 2 piece bolt that pivots in the middle. So yes they shoot as badly as they sound like they would. As a ruger fan IMO ruger should be embarrassed to make this rifle.

The ballistics of the 5.7 are not too much more than the 22 Hornet.
When I saw the round i thought like everyone else it would be a neat little varminting round.
Also thought a 19 Badger (30 Carbine necked to 204) would be a neat round to chamer a 77/22H in.
I have a 77/22H originally I had a really big scope on it and was not impressed with the groups, went to the Hornady 35 grain bullets and the groups closed up.  At first i just thought it was the hornet and having problems makeing a group at 100 yards.
One of the guys i met here met me at the range with his 22 Hornet handi and he was making quarter sized groups with his reloads.
Changed the scope to a 3-9X38 Weaver V and the 46 grain bullets tightend right up and the 35 graines opened up a littel but not bad.
Krochus, is there something with your rifle that is causing a problem, Stock touches the barrel, barrel wedge loose, any number of things.
Have you sent it back to the factory with a target?
A buddy had a Ruger 77/17 that would not shoot at all.  Sent it back and found out that the barrel was a 204 Barrel.
just wonder if something goofy was done and you ended up with a 243 barrel on your 22 hornet.  That would cause some accuracy problems.

I am not an expert in metalurgy but I believe that the Ruger 77/22Hornet action has a lot more beef than the 5.7FN pistol.  I could be wrong on that; but it is my impression.

I had a 77/22 Hornet with open sights when they just came out and it was a shooter.  More often than not, the groups were in the 1.5" and ocasionally 3/4" at 100 yards.  I wish I never traded it in.

The 5.7 FN would be a great round for reloading it to different levels (including the 22LR level with lead bullets).

Or a 4.6x30, even better. Same case [I think] and .17 caliber!
