Don't think Thompson ever offered a 10" 45-70, but they offered the 14".  YHowever, most custom barrel makers will build you one in what ever length you want.  I have a Bullberry that is 8".

You might be looking at a 10" that has been cut down and recrowned.

I have owned a 12" ported T/C "Hunter" barrel for about 18 years, and a custom 6 1/2" "stub" barrel made by SSK for several years. SSK will certainly make a 10" barrel for you, but the recoil can be brisk with the short barrels. I encourage you to look for a 12" Hunter barrel.

I got a Super 14 stainless barrel with the muzzle brake. I don't like muzzle brakes AT ALL so I cut it off in the lathe. I like the 12.5" barrel I have left. I don't think I would want a barrel ANY shorter, though!

how bad is it without the muzzle brake ?
I have a 12'' with the standard brake and was thinking of shortening it to 10''.

just checking to see if its a bad idea.  ;D

I have only shot mild 300 grain loads so far so I'm not really able to give a good comparison. I think anything shorter than 12" is too short but then I'm only guessing!. Recoil is ok with the 300s.

My 8" barrel is WICKEDEVIL!...But I prefer the recoil to a muzzle brake!  Use a good leather shooting glove on your shooting hand!

If  loaded on the "Trapdoor Springfield" level, it's not too bad, and is more accurate than most folks would expect.  When you load it hotter, say around 45 grains of RL7 with a 330gr cast bullet, it is a nasty beast, and it's hard not flinch when you shoot!  Factory loads seem to be pretty stiff also, and those are supposed to be safe for most good firearms.

My 8" Bullberry will print 1" groups @ 100 yards with 405 grain factory loads, if you take your time - but damn it kicks!!!!!!

Short barrel 45/70s are fun with the right loads.  I'm carrying a 4" barrel Contender deer hunting this year.  300 gr bullets at about 1200 fps are easy to shoot.  Recoil could get pretty hairy with heavier loads.

I love my 45-70's...but, I'm not sure I'd want one shorter than 14".  I have a 14" hunter barrel w/ brake and scoped, and a S-16 barrel w/o brake and no scope. I shoot the 16 more than the 14.  I just don't like the brake.  I'd thought often about just cutting it off, which leave about 12.5", but, decided the better route would be to just trade it for a 14" non-braked barrel. ???
