7MM Weatherby Mag in a 7MM Rem Mag chamber???
« on: December 09, 2003, 04:10:50 PM »
Hey Guys...I went to a co-worker's house for beers earlier, and was checking out his arsenal...one gun case had a Weatherby Vanguard with a box of 7MM Weatherby Mags in it...the barrel stated something like "only use 7MM Rem Mag ammo....".  Is he going to blow himself up?  I KNOW he's shot at least a box through there, or at least he says he has...he just assumed that his "Weatherby" was a Weatherby Magnum...which, I guess someone might mistake, I don't know (wouldn't have either one, personally).  He didn't have any "fired" cases to check out...sounds scary, to me, anyway.

7MM Weatherby Mag in a 7MM Rem Mag chamber?

The two 7mm cartridges are very close in size. A 7mm Weatherby could be chambered in a 7mm Rem Mag with a little force. The Weatherby runs about 3100 psi higher in chamber pressure which cvertainly isn't good for the gun. If you're a friend, tell him to trash the Weatherby ammo and buy some 7mm Rem Mag ammo before he hurts his gun or himself.

I'm not even sure that you can cycle weatherby ammo in regular mag chambered guns.  The 7mm Rem Mag has a relatively sharp shoulder, whereas the Weatherby has a much more rounded shoulder.  Still, like everyone has said, stick to only what the gun is chambered for.

I went around and around with a kid in WM a couple of years ago. They sell the Vanguard in 300 win and 300 wby. I wanted the 300 wby. It took me half an hour to convince him to go int he back and pull one out. It was indeed 300wby. Made me so mad I didn't buy it. If this is one they sell at WM your friend needs to thank you and buy ALL of your beer from now on as that rifle does not come in 7mm wby to my knowledge.

I also have a Weatherby Vanguard but in the VGX model and its a 7mm rem mag.  I don't think you can cycle 7mm weatherby ammo in that gun.  But the funny thing is you can fire 7mm rem mag ammo in a 7mm weatherby with no problems at all.  Its a good way to fire form brass.  But the other way is a no no.

Looking at the measurements of the 2 calibers it looks like it would be vary possible to chamber the wea. ammo in the rem mag with a little force, as everyone has stated you need to advise him of the danger. :D   JIM

As far as chambering the Weatherby ammo into the Remington chamber, it was so easy I couldn't believe it...it fed easily and then the bolt closed with no discernable difficulty...I'm sure that's another reason why it went unnoticed for so long.  The guy he bought the rifle from--a civil engineer, no less (nothing against engineers, I just woulda thought the "devil in the details" would've caught on earlier--the guy even has an FFL!)--told him specifically to "make sure you only put Weatherby ammo in this...", or something to that effect...moreover, last year, I helped drag a deer out that he'd shot with the darn gun, using that same box of Weatherby ammo...at the time, I didn't pay attention to what he was shooting.  So yeah, it is very easy--with this particular rifle, anyway--to chamber 7mm Weatherby Mag ammo in a 7mm Rem. Mag chamber. And it shot "relatively" well, I guess.  Anyway, we've changed his ammo, and he's appropriately sheepish about the whole thing...I think it scared him a bit.
