couple of handi questions

im wanting to put together a long range 223 handi
has anyone done this/?
i know where i can get my hands on a nice handi in 223 with a heavy 22" barrel and cinnamon laminated stocks
i want to send it to H&R and have a fluted heavy 223 barrel fitted to the frame assuming they still do that?'
then thinking abt changing the stock over to a regular synthetic set. would the laminated be better suited for long range as far as being steadier??
would love to have the fluted barrel threaded for an ar style flash hider would H&R do that??
anyone with any experience in long range shooting with a handi let me hear from you
pictures of your long range handi would be even better

I'm pretty sure the answer to this one is, No. They are not a custom shop. I'm guessing they'd squack "alteration" and void the warrenty. Which in itself is not a bad thing because most folks can do better to a barrel an fit then they do for their warrenty 2" at 100.
Keep in mind these guns are under $300, and you can't expect $1000 bench gun accuracy from them.
 Yes, alot can be done with them too improve accuracy. But it's still a break action single that's NOT a Ruger 1.

Handis are great guns for the price but very few of them will make great long range target rifles.

maybe its just me but i had a223 handi a couple years ago that would take out a dime at 200 yards with the rifle laying in sandbags atop of a sawhorse
i could put three shots on a postage stamp at 200 yards with it any day of the week
still kick myself for letting that one get away from me
even called the guy today to see if he still had it, he dont 

i even had a survivor 308 that we used to shoot thru a hogwire fence and clip the necks off squash in out neighbors garden  and it was two acres away probably around 200ish yards

so i know at least SOME of these guns will shoot

but again maybe its just me
i have always pushed the limits of all my firearms in terms of accuracy

just checked the barrel accessory program site and the 24inch fluted is "not available at this time"
think i'll set this thing up with the scope i have and just see what i can get out of it as is
but our shooting range is in the middle of our hunting land and cant do any shooting til after season
thats why i wanted to try to get this thing set up by the end of the year still might be possible
just hope that barrel becomes available again soon

I am lucky enough to own a number of very good shooters. A couple of which I did nothing to! Others needed a bit of work and others still just needed to find their pet load. To date I own over 30 and have worked on at least twice that number. I have only seen two that haven't been able to make into shooters. One was simply a bad barrel, VERY bad chatter when the rifling was cut. Resulting in different diameters and extremely rough finish. The other is still being worked on. (I don't give up easy!   )

 Oh, well 200 yards is very doable with many of the handis, I have a 223 bull that'll at least scare the dickins out of a postage stamp at 200, probaly get 1 of 3 init, like cw said it's really a matter of finding that pet load.
When you said long I thought you ment 600-1000.
 I wouldn't hessitate with 300yrad shots at all with mine and maybe a bit further. But I'm the kinda guy that like to prove MY ability at a given range before I try it on game, to date I haven't been able to get to a range with more than 300 so I don't know,

minute of small pumpkin at 50yds with factory ammo just manipulating sights, floating the forearm, weighting and shaping the stock (add-on cheek rest sanded to fit).  then work on your handloads.  I have no idea exactly how tight mine shoots but I can hit the bands on a bowling pin consistently at 30yds freehand fairly quick and .45-70 tier three loads kick so I bet a heavier barrel with less recoil in .223 is gonna shoot.  I'm not an expert by any means but by following advice from quick and cw I got mine going after some experimenting and probably 50rds.  time and money well spent.  if you don't mind changing the light feel and balance, pack that stock with a sock FULL of birdshot and fill up the grip cap too, they shoot better when they weight 12 pounds.

and don't forget to harass tim and cw with pm's, it'll speed you up
