Carving out your own bow .. Anyone else ?
« on: November 03, 2010, 04:16:56 PM »
I am on my 4th red oak board bow , First was a quick break second was low draw weight but a very accurate shelved stiff handle flat bow.. It too broke when i decided to back it with bamboo to increase draw wt. ( didnt know that red oak doesnt have a great compression thresh hold like other woods when it comes to backing it with tough materials like boo or fiberglass )

Now on my 3rd red oak i went flat bow again ( with a more appropriate grained piece of wood ) and ended up with a 68"-66" nock to nock flat bow drawing in at 50# +/- @ 28" draw , Backed with a nylon fabric with the real tree patern. @ 10 yards it is digging a 2 blade crimson croc 125gr broad headed arrow 7-8" into the broad head shooting block.. I think this not so graceful example could prove a viable hunting tool we'll see ;)

4th is a 66"-64" NtN pyramid shape traditional ( no shelf like the 2nd and 3rd ) and I really like this design , feels very good in the hand and quite attractive to the eye...  Still under construction at this very moment.

I have been massing a good variety of hard ( bow ) woods but i have quite a wait ahead of me till its time to start scraping out a new bow with any of it less i force the moisture out through one of a couple techniques..

Some of the woods i have squrriled away are ~ Hornbeam , Laurel oak , Red oak , Black oak , Black Jack oak , Red maple , American Elm , Eastern Red cedar ( that beautiful purple hearted cedar that is tuff as nails ) And while i can say i have some seasoned hickory .. Its been on the ground on a 4 acre lot for 5 years and is proving to be real hard to get to due to nasty briar build up from lack of clearing.
But I'm hoping to claim it and see if the bugs have totally had their way with it or not.

Any other bowyers lurking the GBO ?

I've built about a dozen so far. I've had two that broke. Most have been made of red oak, which I really like. finding a good board can take some time, has to have the right grain. Many of the oak staves I sent for and got them from my friend Philip Sylvia that has woodbows.com red oak has been his specialty for years! Most of what I make have been long American bows of lower poundage. scout4<><

I made a #55@28" with horn tips using Osage Orange.

I've made 1/2 a dozen or so from Osage and Elm. None have broke but they are moslty wall hangers. I  made a laminated longbow which I sold to a friend and also made a take down recurve which I will be using this weekend. I already shot a buck with my compound so it is does only now. I have never killed any deer with a traditional bow and I would like to get something with my homemade one. I'll post pics if I get one.

I've been making Selfbows since the mid 90's. I have learned more about Archery in the last 15 or 16 years than I could have imagined as a direct result of making my Selfbows and associated equipment. The satisfaction gained making and using your own Traditional gear is immense.

I use Australian timbers for my Bows. There's plenty of Osage, Black Locust etc growing feral down here. Got me buggered why anyone would import it, slice of home perhaps but in my experience suitable Australian bow making  timbers are the equal of anything anywhere in the world. I prefer to use Brigalow, Spotted Gum, Pink Ash and Red Ash but have used Osage, White Oak and many other imported timbers.

At the moment I am not shooting my Selfbows but am dabbling in ILF bows. It's all Archery to me. I've also made numerous Bamboo backed bows and a handful of fibreglass lamination bows. Even then I ground my own lamination's. Here's a photo of one of my Selfbows and a Back-quiver full of self nocked arrows I made.

I used to work as a maintenance machinist in a factory that made custom hardwood interior trim, doors staircases, mantles, etc. Needless to say, I had access to all types of scrap hardwoods like white oak, hickory, maple, walnut, and even South American varieties like Jatoba, Ipe, and, well you get the point.

The first bow I ever made was a take-down laminated recurve. I got all the plans and prints from Bingham Projects. www.binghamprojects.com It shot very well, I was very pleased with it, it was 95% complete--when I threw it down and broke it. Heres why: I had not purchased a proper bow stringer and was using a piece of mason line I had rigged up. My wife would put the string on for me while I concentrated on pulling the bow enough to get it on(all the while saying I was going to get a proper stringer). We strung it up and I shot it for around an hour or so. I was tickled pink with the groups I was getting out of it. When I was thru shooting, I asked my wife to take the string off for me while I manned my homemade "stringer". I pulled the bow up a little at a time trying to get it "just enough" to get the bowstring off. My wife unhooked the string at the same instant the mason line broke, and the limb smacked her in the face right under her eye. I gave the bow a sling to help her and see how bad it was, and broke a piece off the top of the riser. Luckily, a red spot on her cheek for a few days was all that she got from it(along with everyone who saw her thinking I had hit her) It has been well over a year before I decided to try it again. As we speak, I'm in the process of carving out another riser.

I also started two flatbows, one hickory and the other maple that are still waiting to be finished. Not sure how maple will hold up, but I think the hickory one will be OK. While I was at the factory I mentioned before, I took the notion to cut some staves out of some hedge(hedge-apple, horse apple, osage orange) trees and run them thru the kiln and try some self-bows, but the notion was as far as it got.

Anyhow, among the 15 other projects I have going right now, I plan to finish the flatbows with a tiller of 45-50lbs @ 32"(I have a long draw length) I also plan to have the riser completed and my recurve shooting again. It is 64" left hand with a draw weight of 65lbs @ 32". I had pictures of it on here along with my limb press and epoxy curing heat box, but I've since deleted the pics on the hosting web-site.

I would love to do a laminated longbow as well, guess that'll be 16.... and the hedge (or osage whichever you want to call it) selfbow still comes to mind-that's 17... I really need to get some of the irons out of the fire.

I've wanted to make one for a while out of osage orange, but never got around to it,  but this makes me want to reincarnate the idea and do it.

Hickory, Dogwood with a Bamboo backing.

Sounds like a good combination. I think I'm going to finish the hickory flatbow I started.

I know exactly what you mean, Richard. Every time you take the notion, 15 other "necessities" pop up and sideline your "want to do's". Or if your like me "honey do's".... ;D ;D

My favorite is an Ironwood self bow my friend made for me it has bends and knots and I call it my ugly stick. But he has made them from rock elm boards(pyramid bow) hickory boards osage staves. ash saplings and iron wood saplings also some backed ones, and also bamboo flooring.... but my favorite is the "ugly stick" I am no top shooter or anything but it has over 40 lbs at 28 and if I took it for deer the bow would work if I did my part.
I always wanted to use some of my knife river flint and have someone make me a few points and hunt with it, but here in MN stone points are illegal for big game. So that never happened.
He and I started out trying to make bows and after I almost finished 1 it turned into a propeller with such twisting i gave up on making it/them. He continued and makes some great bows that sell well at rendezvous -thejanitor

Nice bow there HFD60!   I've got three staves in process in the garage.  Two osage one ash.  Winter time not much gets done on garage projects and don't think working on em the house is gonna fly....

Never got one to a useful weight.  I have lightweight red oak flatbow in the basement that survived.  A really nice osage stave has been staring me down for a couple years but life with young boys has stunted my bowyer activities.  I have made a couple nice laminated longbows.  My brother outshoots me reguarly with one of them.   :o
