Drop-in chokes?
« on: November 02, 2010, 05:13:42 AM »
Ok, I'm confused and Google isn't helping much.

I've been looking at some custom choke-tube manufacturers on the net, and many of them advertise "drop-in" chokes in addition to some listing "Factory screw-in" chokes.  I'm not familiar with how these work.  Do you use some type of adapter?  Do you have to have a special barrel to use them?

Just wondering.  Thanks.

MG, can you provide the links to these sites that are offering  'drop in's".
i jut guessing, but what i think they are meaning to say, is that thier chokes, will match the thread count and pitch of your barrel,
so if you have a Remington, then they will send you the choke with the correct threading...
i dont see how it would be possible to literally drop in a choke into a threaded barrel end and have it work. without some form of attachment, and without modification to the factory barrel threading.

Here are a few.  All of them are on the TurkeyShoot.net domain, but that's due to that site offering a hosting service for gunsmiths:

Well its looks like they do drop in, held in place by a snap ring. but they require a modified and machined barrel
and at that cost, wow, outta my price range  ::)
for the cost of the work and chokes, it dont make much sense to me
interesting though

Yeah, these are kinda special purpose built for card shooting/turkey shoots.  I'm having a screw-in type choke built by the $umtoy guy.  Gonna see how that does.  I MIGHT go the full-custom barrel route down the road.  We'll see.  I've always been and avid fan of the "turkey shoot", but it really does end up being as much about the gun as the shooter (with a bit of luck involved too).  Hope fully this will make me a bit more competitive.

Just found the whole "drop-in" bit odd though.  I've been shooting these for years - seen a lot of different chokes, but never had seen (or even heard of) that style out in the real world before :).

well it looks like to me, that they are using the same basic idea as how some half shafts lock into place in the differential of a transaxle on a car.
but what i dont really see how they come out, with enough pressure on the snap ring, a deep enough snap groove to withstand the shot load passing thru the choke, how do you release the ring to remove the choke ? i dunno.
i have  hard time understanding the need for this.. im not familiar with a turkey / card shoot

what would you need a special built scew in choke for ?

A turkey shoot is a shooting competition often held in the south.  You pay a fee (usually $2-3) to shoot a target in a round of 10-15 people at a distance of 60 to 90 feet.  There are various rules, but typically the person who gets a pellet closest to the bullseye wins.  Now there's a lot of luck involved there, but naturally the more dense your pattern, the better your odds.  The prize is often a turkey or a ham (hence the name), but it varies.  Shoots around here often do money shoots, or often they'll even shoot off guns (usually at $20-25 per shot instead of the $2-3).

drop in chokes have a straight od and are held in by a screw on cap. Barrel are more expensive to have drop in choke installed, but extra choke are cheaper to buy because of no threads.
