For those wanting to shoot the 720 grain bullets
« on: November 01, 2010, 07:04:11 PM »
This weekend I FINALLY got time away from school, and reamed my 45-120's throat to accommodate the 720's seated...well, long.  About .3" in the case.  Longer than my picture.

Anywho, I reamed the throat, everything went smooth, but the bullet is simply sized too large to work.  It causes my case to bulge when seated, causing really hard chambering regardless of the throat length.  I'm not sure how sizing these bullets would go with a gas check, which would allow them to chamber better and frankly I wasn't at home to try it.  Also, sizing the bullets may have a negative impact on how well they seal, although that would depend on your particular barrel.

Now I have a throat that looks more like a nice long train tunnel, and while I doubt it'll hurt accuracy enough for me to notice in this gun since I only shoot it offhand, but a lesser recoiling gun you could shoot from the bench without bodily harm might not group quite as well as you wish.

However, I do plan on shooting some 405's just barely in the case.  ;D

Can you outside turn the case necks to make room? I have to do that with .381" cast bullets to chamber in my 38-55, the other option is to open up the neck a little.

If you were able to actually chamber them, though with difficulty, you are probably only about 'a thou' or so away from the size you need. If you do have the right dia. sizer die go ahead and do it, the gas check will take it.

The extension didn't fit the reamer :(

We had to rig up something else...the reamer was different than the ones I've used in the past, size-wise.

I should add, who wants the throater extension now?

Next time I'm home I'll size the bullet and see how it goes chambering.

Ty,

What powder(s) you using that you need the extra case capacity in the 45-120?  Will your gun stablize a 720 grain bullet? I think I read here that the twist in a handi 45 rifle wasn't fast enough.  Send me a PM regarding the extension and where you got the reamer.  Might want to open my 45-120 up a bit.  Going to try your filler idea with H4895 next time I load for my gun.  See how fast I can push a Remington 405 SP. ::)

As I remember, Ty has already pushed the limit with the 405 gr.   :-\  I do know that from the pictures of the deer he shot with it, last year was it Ty? that I decided the 405 much over 2100 fps was a little bit to explosive!   :D  That's why I decided to work up a 2500 +/- fps load using the 350 gr. designed for the 458 WinMag.   :P

The extension didn't fit the reamer :(

That's strange.   ???  It worked fine for me using the throater I got from whatever company that was that used to be a advertiser here...  :-\

AtLaw,

The 350 grainer, is that the Hornady RN bullet?  Any load data you want to PM I would appreciate.

Judging from the size of the craters the 405s make in my backstop it would seem they would be a good candidate for a deer grenade at the velocity you can get from the 45-120.  Not planning on hunting deer with the 45-120, just like to use it to blast away at the club.

The 405's certainly expanded last year..exit hole the size of a basketball on a deer about 50 yards away, on a steep hill above me.

I wouldn't suggest a shoulder shot at 2550 fps...

As far as what powders wil I be using, many work, IMR 4320 is what I use for my hottest loads, and seating the bullets out further should gain me some velocity, especially in those 500+ grain bullets that are seated deep!

The throater used was from Elk Ridge rentals I believe, it was too large in diameter to fit inside the extension.  Biker, if you want the extension let me know and I'll try to get it out...I believe it is still at my buddy's shop, but I'll get it as soon as I can.

Ty,

The extension would be nice, take your time looking for it as gun season is getting close and both my slug guns are disassembled at the moment.   :P  I am beginning to think I like tweaking handis more than hunting. ::)

405 grains @ 2550 FPS, sounds like an awesome ground hog round. :o

Have you seen what that bullet at that velocity does to possums and deer?

If you like, I'm always glad to post them again :D

720 grains!  That is 9 bullets to the pound of lead!

That should be good for feral Peterbuilts!!!!!

And I thought my 444 was a big bore.

Hopefully I will have more pictures after deer season, and I can make a montage!
