Sportster frame an SB-1?
« on: October 26, 2010, 08:02:01 PM »
I'm sure this has been asked, but I've been searching the FAQ's and this site for an hour and a half without much luck.

So stupid question(s) coming...

1) is the sportster frame an SB-1 frame?
2) can it be fitted with a 357, 44 mag, 20 gauge, etc barrel?  (not by factory, I got that...)
3) What is "offset" - the barrel or frame to allow "rim-fire"?

THANK YOU!!

Mike

Sportster is still a rimfire action with offset firing pin. The Versa Pack is centerfire with the .22 LR barrel being offset. As a matter of fact, I recently tried to set up my Versa Pack to take my .22 Hornet barrel..the barrel fit just right but with the large firing pin hole I had deformed primers and even one which blew through. That was with Rem 71/2 primers and with Lil'gun powder, starting at 22,000 cup.

As Ironglow said, the Sportster frame is an SS1 rimfire only frame due to the offset firing pin, will only work with rimfire barrels.

Does the Versa Pack frame have the larger shotgun firing pin?

Thanks!

I picked up one this afternoon and it's got the large firing pin.

H&r has a long record of using what is on the shelf when they build a gun.  I have shotgun receivers with small pins, and I guess there are rimfire receivers with both large and small pins, first all center fire guns were on SB2 frames, then some were made on SB1 frames, bottom line is that there is no right answer to a lot of H&R questions.  Larry

Perhaps if mine had the small pin, I could have used it with my Hornet barrel..  My problem at the moment is that I have 3-4 H&Rs with 3 centerfire barrels...but only 1 SB2 action.. :D :(

Try some of those harder primers (CCI?) that dont seem to go off for some people. Might just do it, if not, back the load down a tad too. Worth a 'shot', doncha think?
