This was #7 , but the first on these plans.  I am disabled so I would only work on it a little at a time , but about 2 week if you stay at it and have your materials at hand .   This one is made from 4 1x8 cedar that are from a tree off of my deer lease .

No but I have built 3 of those and they are good and easy to build , that was the first cedar strip i made .  This is from carringplace , I liked the looks and made the plans myself to match the one I liked.

I built a Wee Lassie and Wee Lassie II about 10 years ago.
A few months ago I was saddened to hear that Mr. McCarthey was in a nursing home. 
I had bought his book and spoke with him on the phone on at least one occasion.

Have you used any wood other than western red?

That wood there is red cedar from a tree here in Ms. just a good straight cedar tree .  I had leased some clear cut that joins some land I had leased to deer hunt and the loggers piled the cedar up for me and left it .  That is only 4 , 8-10 inch boards I have plenty left from only one of the trees .  I also have a new rail fence from some of the smaller ones. That canoe is 12' and 32" beam.

What did the canoe end up weighing in at?

Any trouble bending the cedar to the stems?

I used yellow poplar as the main wood on mine.  I also have a couple paulonia  (royal wood) trees to cut down.  Vry light weight but strong.  Thinking of them as a good canoe wood.

Just as in the pic it is 30#  and with seat 32# .  The Royal or prinses wood would be good and light but have you got any that is straight enough to saw.  Balsa would work but would be plain looking Skeeter boats proved that , they used balsa at one time in construction.  I made one that weighted 17 # and was 11' .  4 and 2 oz glass   it wasn't  as durable as I need.

That red ceder truely is pretty wood isn't it. I bought a coffin for my Dad made out of it. He was making them by hand one at a time.

My Wee Lassie came in at 25 lb and the Wee Lassie II at 30 lb.
Saw a Wee Lassie that came in at 20 lb.

I have 3 paulonia on our property.  2 are long enough to flat saw logs of 8-12 feet.  Will probably only get 2 logs with max diameter of 14 - 16 inches.  More than enough to get a small supply for building.  Had thought of making the sides out of the lighter wood and the bottoms out of a denser wood.  That's the great thing about strip built.  You can go anywhere with it.
