357 sight in ?
« on: October 21, 2010, 10:37:31 AM »
i have a 357mag talo and was wonder how i should sight this in for hunting with a scope (scope is a simmons pro diamond 4x32).should i sight dead on at 30yrds or 50yrds or a hundred.i know alot of people say that the 357 is good to 125yrds so i figured this would be my max  range.sighting in a rifle caliber isnt that hard for me but im kind of out of it when it comes to pistol calibers in rifles.most likely my shots are going to be from point blank to 75yrds.ive shot 158gr magtech with good accuracy an have also shot the 140 hornady LE with good promise till old scope went south.what other factory fodder would be good to look at for deer hunting.
thanks

I have a Rossi 357 with the same scope on it I have it shooting about an 1.5" high at 75 yards originally with the Win whitebox 125gr sjsp I took a spikehorn buck with it at 134 paces and I'm 6'4" with 36" inseam so it was probably 125-130 yard shot double lunged him and blew our the drivers side shoulder he dropped where he stood. I have switched to the hornady LE rounds with just about the same acurasy but haven't killed a deer with those yet. I heard some people on here state that the magtech are hard and don't open up well.

Hi,

I have a 357 Talo (maxi, no longer a mag) and I have zeroed at 25 yards for squirrels.  Bit of overkill I admit but one big hole to me is a lot better than picking out #6 shot.  Anyway, I have been shooting 180 grain Hornady HP/XTPs over 19 grains of H110, which is a couple of grains below max load.  The round comes in an inch or so high @ 100 yards with the 25 yard zero.  Using a cheap 4x scope with  "high" rings so about 1.5" offset between centerlines of bore and scope.  I  just loaded some 125 grain HP/XTPs over 20 grains of H110 and w/o a scope adjustment the rounds impact about 4" below the bullseye @ 100 yards.  Also the group is not so good with the 125s, but the powder charge is light, a bit below starting load if I remember right.

I personnally would not use the HP/XTP bullets for deer as they fragment on fox squirrels. :o  Yes, I know many folks use them in CFs and saboted MZ, just my biased opinion.

Okay, now to try and answer your answer your question, if you are zeroed @ 100 yards with a scope you should be good to 125 yards.  The slow buckhammers I shoot with a scoped shot gun when zeroed @ 100 yards will hit about 3" low @ 125 yards so your 357 mag should be about the same.

The first two paragraphs was my attempt to get you to rent the 357 Max Reamer. ;D

good luck hunting this fall.

Kawie,

You are one busy person.  I got tired just reading all the stuff you got going on.  I reamed my Talo 357 and it took about 15 minutes so it's not a big project.  There are good instructions in the FAQs for the job and the rental reamer from GBO is the way to go money wise.

Good luck hunting this fall.

Have you tried to chamber the Max brass in it yet? It may surprise you how far in it goes (or not) and there is the .360 (?) brass some have found fits without reaming.
Just a few ideas for you........
