I've come across a No.1 in 300 Weatherby for 599. I've never owned one either before and was interested in opinions about the rifle. Would appreciate any input, thanks.

I love them. Ive had actually better luck getting accuracy out of #1s then i have 77s and theres nothing prettier in my eyes then a #1 with nice wood . Only downside to them i can even come up with is the 1b is a bit heavy to tote around all day.

Lloyd is right about accurate and pretty, and states in his first sentence the sole reason to have one.
I think with #1's, you either love them or you don't.
I have a 1-V and a 1-RSI, both accurate and pretty.
My personal preference is to move toward shorter guns, so a 1B may not be for me.
If you love the way it looks and if a 300 Wby suits your caliber needs, buy it and you will not be dissappointed.

Mines a 30-06 and I love it. For a hunting single shot its hard to beat.

I've got a 1-A in 30-06 and really like it. The only dislike I can think of, is the location of the scope rings. You need a scope with very good eye relief. I've got a Leupold VX-III, 1.75 - 6 power on mine and the scope is mounted as far to the rear as the rings will allow. I have absolutely no problem on the lower power settings but when I crank it all the way up to 6X I have to slightly creep forward on the stock to get a full view through the scope. This is really no biggie to me, I just thought I would mention the only negative I could think of.
Offset rings are offered by Ruger as well as Leupold to let you bring the scope back a little closer to your eye if you really couldn't get comfortable shooting it the way it is.

It was Bill Ruger's pride and joy. I love mine in .308.

I have hade a love affair with the #1 since the first ad I saw way back.

Remember that first time hunting with my #1B 7mm mag. sitting there in the Blue Mountains of Southeastern Washington, just enjoying the lines and beauty of that rifle.

I also find the 26" barreled rifles to be a bit heavy for these old arms and shoulder, but the "boolie" sling has pretty much curred that problem.

I especially like the 22" barreled versions as they are so nice to carry. My #1s - 45/70 with it's 22" barrel is light and fast to handle a GREAT carry rifle!

I have NEVER liked or enjoyed the Alaxander Henry forends, and it took a bit of thinking to cure that problem on the first rifle I obtained which was so equiped.

The cure, cut the forend off at a 45 degree angle, up close to the groove and in stall a nice piece of contrasting walnut or as I have done on the 45/70 a piece of ebony.

This makes a classy looking rifle with a nice slender/light forend.

The only thing I don't like is the safety is too long. When you eject an empty
shell it strikes the top of the safetyand falls back into the chamber. If you hold the rifle on its side the casing will usually miss the safety and fall out.

Being a long time and avid reloader, the safety location or size has never been a problem for me.

If it was, it would be an easy fix. A bit of filing, polishing, bluing and away you go!

This is gonna cost me some money one of these days; well, maybe tomorrow........gunshow!
It would be my 'indulgence' gun; I'll never afford a real British sporting rifle, and with a Ruger available why should I?
Ive had enough various vintage single shots to be tired of old technology, metalurgy and ham handed prior 'gunsmithing' that needed to be corrected.
Maybe I cant be satisfied with something I cannot easily futz with, but I should give that a try.

The person who mounted that scope must have arms about a foot long, and his neck must be attached to his/her belly button.

Over the years, I have never had an negative issue with mounting a scope on a #1, and the scope/rifle pictured has plently of room to move the scope the 3 or 4" ahead where it should be.

Hard to imagine an adult sized person shooting that rifle if they are using proper body and head position.

I've had a few and the only dislike I have is the positioj of the scope. I used Leupi VXII in 2x7 and had to use extension rings to get proper eye relief at 6 or 7x. I currently am down to a 1s in 45/70 and use a leupi 2.5x scout scope which requires 9-13" of eye relief. Extension rings and 1" limbsaver pad and I'm good to go.....points like a shotgun! That's the rifle in my avatar.

Love mine in 7mag. Wish it were the international and I don't like the scope. That's about all I can say bad about it.

I have a 1B in .223. While I love the look, it has not been as accurate - consistently - as I wished. And it is touchy to cheek pressure. Also on a Prairie Dog shoot, the underlever was a hassle, requiring me to move the gun at each shot. Also I struggle with the comb height. Have a lace on cheek piece that helps some. The hammer fall / lock time is pretty slow, even with a Wolfe spring kit in it. I think if it were in a caliber more commonly used for walking and hunting, it would be better for me. Still they look so cool.

If the gun is in any kind of great shape then you got a steal.
The caliber is also hard to find since that caliber has been dicontinued since 2006 I beleive.
I currently own 2 of Ruger #1 bs in 300 wby mag.

I love all of my #1's. The only drawback that I can think of is the safety blocking the bottom of the ejector slot. Not a big problem as I just remove them and reshape. A little cold blue and it looks stock.

I had one in .300 WTBY some years back. It was a beautiful rifle that shot great when I did my part, but it would kick me into next week. I am not recoil shy, but it beats my .416 Ruger recoil wise hands down.

Really enjoy hunting with the Ruger Number One! This one is a .375 H&H:

Typically they have more than adequate accuracy, carry well, and are just a pleasure to own, shoot or hunt with.

The Scope mounts are a little far forward as others have said. Otherwise, it's a classy rifle that has a lot going for it.
