My first deer of the season
« on: October 19, 2010, 11:37:54 AM »
It was from a single shot weapon, and because I can't use my Handi for two more weeks I figured you guys wouldn't mind...

10/17/2010 was one of the ones to remember, but not for all the good reasons. First I was late getting started. I had a couple minutes of last minute things to do that ended up taking almost an hour. Then on my way to Sherburne (public land management area in Louisiana), I-10 stopped around the Gross Tete exit. I decided that even though I was late I could setup and get a couple hours of stand time.

I drove my 4-wheeler to my super secret honey hole, and was greeted by two other ATVs, so I kept going. I scouted around for about 15 minutes in a new area and found some heavy traffic trails and needed to get setup quickly, it was already pushing 5:00 PM. This was my first time setting up with the Lone Wolf sticks and Millenium Lock-on. I only went up 2 sticks high for a total of about 10 feet off the ground because frankly I wasn't expecting much given the obstacles and the delays getting into the woods.

Hearing noises to my right, I switched up to shoot left handed. Then at 6:30 I heard something coming quickly to my left. I saw the spike coming in fast, so I switched back to right handed. Just before I went to grunt he stopped about 20 yards quartering slightly to me. I put the crosshairs on him, and squeezed off an arrow. I heard it make contact and watched as he trotted off about 60 yards and out of sight.  3 hours later I was enjoying a cold one sitting on top of a full ice chest.

Nice and congrats.  8)  I'm really hoping to blood my .45 Colt BC when firearm season opens.  I blooded my .45-70 BC in Sept. early doe season.  The other gun I really want to get a chance to try on a deer is my New Model Blackhawk .45 Colt.  If one gets within 50 -75 max yards anyway.  ;)
