rossi barrel/receiver variants
« on: October 18, 2010, 03:43:53 PM »
I've noticed people starting to buy and sell used single shot barrels.  I seems that some are not getting the correct barrel for their receiver.  I was wondering how many barrel and receiver variants there are.  I took apart the two that I have access to and started measuring.

One is a full size 12ga/308 matched set made in 2004
The other is a youth 20ga/223 matched set made in 2009
The receivers look about the same.  The 2004 has the safety located higher than the 2009.
The youth has shorter stock, forearm, and barrel.
I switched the barrels and they seamed to fit really well.

Measuring the barrel lugs.----  length was 2.511 to 2.517    width was .587 to .590
measureing from the end of barrel to center of forearm lug---full size about 11 1/4 in.  youth about 9 3/8 in.

Does anyone have any measurements for the 410/22 set and the wizard?

I have one of the 22/410's here but nothing to measure it with.  They are a lot narrower than the 12/20 frame and the barrel center is lower, but the small barrel will fit the large frame but the fireing pin will not strike the primer.  I heard a long time back there were three frame sizes, but I have never seen the third size.  The wizzard is a whole different animal.  Larry

Thats a real downer.  :'(  I don't see anybody selling their centerfire barrels.  If I can't get the 308 shooting any better, it's getting traded off.

Judging by the stock numbers, the W means wizard.  Larry says the wizards are a different animal.  That means they won't fit my matched set frame.

Ah, sorry but I misunderstood.  Thought you said you wanted wizard barrels too.  Rossi never intended to sell barrels for their old models, although some people swap them as is the case with H&R Handi-Rifles/shotguns.  I had been considering a Wizard earlier this year, but purchased my .45-70 BC instead.  I'm waiting to see if they actually start producing all the calibers they stated they were going to before getting into them.  8(

With my luck, if it bought a wizard they would stop produceing barrels.

My R357S rifle the barrel OD is 3/4" at the breech end, and only barrels with this OD measurement will hit this frame.  I just bought a .410 barrel from a fellow forum member who verified the measurements before I paid.  Can't weight to try it on doves this season.  The gun should weight just around 4 pounds so nice to carry in the field.  ;)

My 308/12ga OD at the breech is about 1 1/8 inches.

By looking at the price of the barrels in that link I think for just a little more you could buy the entire rifle.

This is the conclusion I came to with the H&R long guns as well.  For a couple of sawbucks or so I can buy complete used guns in excellent condition and not have to worry about fitting barrels or swapping stocks, etc.   I payed $70 OTD for the last 20ga H&R I bought at a local pawn shop and it looked like it was brand new.  The last couple of 20ga. H&R barrels I saw in the classifieds here sold for $50 and $60.  ???
