Howdy Pards,

Wonderin wat sum of you fellers 'r pushin down the tube of yer Buffler Gunz? Ah gots troubles wif my boolits runnin outta lube at the end of that 34" barrel. Dick Dastardly 'n I is thinkin' on developin a different slug fer our 45-70s to avoid this problem, he's werkin on a whole new boolit design, along the lines of the PRS slug, whilst Ah'm foolin with a modified 450gr Lee type slug.

But afore Ah go spendin major dinero on a custom mold Ah thought Ah'd check wif this lot here 'n see iffin they's got sumpfin wat werks fer them already!?!?

So far in my 45-70 I have used 405 grain Mid Kansas boolits. I am thinking of a mold though. Mostly my problem is I only shoot my H&R Handi for plainsman events. 405gr and a full case of the good stuff is a prety good kick with a Handi though. Someday, I will get a buffalo rifle of some sort though.

Hey pard! I almost bought one of those Handy Rifles! Nice gunz and well within my budgetary constraints!

Then I threw good sense out the window and blew my annual gun budget on a new Roller!  Cost wise it wasn't nearly as bad some of the super nice Sharps guns made here in the states, and performance wise...well, let's just say I was stunned! Pleasantly so mind you! I got one of those Cabelas Long Range Target models and was extremely pleased.  :-D

Anywayz, here's wat I've come up with so far for curing the lube problem: http://www.cartogra.com/servlet/LinkPhoto?GUID=27e22f49-3c31-3e98-5302-4f0e5fc36608&size= The one on the right is my modifed design I've yet to do any testing with it because it's hard to make from the original slug, but when I have enuff made to give it a solid work out I'll let you know how it does. If it performs, I'll send a sample to Lee and have a custom mold made up.

Meanwhile, DD is getting ready to submit his design for reproduction, I may scrap mine if his works up to expectations and go that route.

Anyone else got a good slug that carries enuff lube to make it through a long string?

I'm currently using two different bullets I use a 459 x 500 lee cast bullet and a 525 grain Montana precision swaged bullet acceptable accuracy inside 3 inches at 200 yards through iron sights (peep) And I just bet you I could hit a sheet of plywood near the middle at a grand :)

I use the Lee 405 hollow base in my 45/70 works good. Some times I reload for pards with the LONG barrel rifles and I fill the cavity with Thompson's PS lube.
Works for me.

RCBS 40-400-CSA in my 40-70BN.  Lyman 457125 in a friend's Trapdoor.  Got good lube star on both my Sharps and his Trapdoor.  Used my own mix for lube.  If you want a lighter bullet with more lube try Lyman 457643 or if larger go to the Postal design.  If you don't get a lube star try a slightly softer lube and see if that does it, or if it's hot go to a slightly harder lube, 'cause the softer one is running out too quickly.  A hot barrel will cause this as well, so if your shooting a repeater with quick second or third shots you may well need a harder lube.
