Marlin Bolt Action, Thumbs UP!

I watched 2 people shooting Marlin bolt actions this weekend, one a 243 and the other a 30-06.  I expected to see average accuracy, but was much surprised to see excellent accuracy and reliability.  I assisted one man bore sight his gun (looking down the barrel and bringing the scope cross hairs onto target). His 50 yard sighter groups were well under 1 inch and when he went to 100 yards, his groups remained about 1 inch.  The man with the 30-06 was getting groups of about 1.5 inches. Both guns were shot with factory ammo.  The action of the 243 was nice and crisp. What a little tack driver!  I have always considered the Marlin bolt actions to be an "also ran", but not any more.  If you need an "economy gun" or a "working gun", the Marlin would be an excellent choice.

Yep on the Marlin Bolt action rifles being accurate.  Have one of the XL7s in 25-06 that I paid around $320 for about 14 months ago.  When I take it to range, expect it to easily shoot one inch groups at 100 yards with my reloads......3/4" groups not that uncommon with rifle if I have right load and I do my job shooting.

My XL7 in 25-06 was dead on from day one, all holes touching.  I feel a bit foolish having rifles costing way more that never seem as accurate.

One thing I can't really tell from the website is what is the difference in a XS7S, XL7S, XL7 and a XS7.

Can anyone elaborate?

I have a friend that wants one of these and we are trying to figure out if we should get a Marlin or a Remington 700 SPS.

I think it goes like this...

XS7- short action blued
XL7- long action blued
SX7S -short action stainless
XL7S- long action stainless

there is also camo that ends in a "C"
and a laminate that ends in a "L"
a youth that ends in a "Y"
and I suppose the walnut ends in a "W"

I have a 7-08 that is a XS7Y It fits both my daughter and I.

My last and final Rem. 700 was a 2 moa gun on a perfect day...I sold it.

Got to do some shooting today and the little XS7 in 7mm-08 out shined them all.  Several Brownings, One TC Venture, and a couple Remingtons.  The little marlin is shooting about 1/2 inch (3 shot) groups at 100!

I too have the XL7 in 25 06.  Love it!  I put a Bushnell Elite 3200 3X9X50 on it.....have NO complaints.  Thinking about buying another XL in 270, and the XS7 in 7mm 08 for my GF.

Did he not also have a shadow in 300 WSM ? I think it is good to have rifles from different companys .
If He was closer I show him our '06 Ruger Mk 2 that shoots MOA . According to Swampy these guns are only good for tomato stakes  ;D Doen't say to much about his marlins .
Swampy wouldn't be such a pain if he would get off being the only guy with the cross on his back for remington .Remington has been putting out a product for a hundred years, and I would think assured for yet another hundred .

My dad just got one in 270 and it was great!!   It consistently grouped between 3/4" and 1" at 100 yards!  Accurate, well built-a lot better than the Stevens.  Great recoil pad which tames it quite well.  The trigger is also very nice for such an economical price!  I would recommend them to anyone!

best bang for the buck that i have come across-i have two XL7C rifles (270 & 30-06)-both out of the box stock,no tuning not even the triggers-both shot factory loads 1 inch or less and last time out with chosen handloads i had "holes touching" groups from both (i was having a good day!)-whsk

Got to shoot mine. Ended up mounting a new redfield scope on it. Got 40 rounds through it (rem 130 grain core loct) and am ver happy with it. First two shots of second box touched. The barrel was hot and I continued to shoot, I started to get flyers but thats kind of expected since the barrel was hot. Anyway, I am happy with it over all. When I get time to shoot it more calculatedly, I am sure I will get some sweet groups. EJ
