T/C Contender older style slider safety problem
« on: October 02, 2010, 12:03:09 PM »
I recently purchased an older T/C Contender frame with the sliding type safety.  The safety will not slide over to the safe position.  The mechanical safety pin at the top of the hammer is flush with the hammer face (in the fire position) and that is where it wants to stay.  I am having difficulty finding disassembly instruction online.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

That safety is a bad design anyhow.  If you let the hammer fall on it accidently, it will peen the end of the pin that you are talking about and is probably the reason yours does not want to come out.  I know that is not the answer you asked for, but that has been my experience.

More to your question, the square block is wedge shaped on the inside and pushes the pin out.  I would imagine that if you get the hammer backed up on a solid surface or some type of fixture, you could whack the square block with something of a non-marring nature and get it free.  My problem was that the pin would stick in the out position and the block would fall completely out of the hammer.  The couple of times this happened to me about 20 years ago I put the block back in, tapped the pin back in and have never used the safety since.

Thanks Curtis!  That's the information I was looking for.  I did what you suggested and it loosened up the pin. As you suspected, the head of the pin is indeed peened. I'll pick up a mini file tomorrow and clean the burr off the end of the pin and that should get it functioning again.  I agree with your assessment, this is a poor safety design.  Thanks again, Steve

At one time TC would install a complete new hammer w/ the new style safety for FREE and even pay the shipping back to you.  And, they could care less if you just bought it used.  They did this for me on two of my older models.  I don't know if this stills stands, but I'd sure give'em a call if I was you. ;D
