New Handi.
« on: September 27, 2010, 02:17:05 PM »
Took a trip to the candy shop today and slapped down a deposit on a new Ultra varmint 243 thumbhole rifle.
I'm probably gonna get another new Redfield for it.
What ammo do these things tend to shoot well with... it'll be an all around rifle for varmints and deer.
I'll post some pics of it when I pick it up and scope it. :)

Spanky, congrats on the new baby.  I can't help you any on loads for it.  I had a 6mm Rem Model 7 years ago and hated it.  It's long gone and I own nothing around 6mm.  Excuse me for saying this, but to me they're bastards....they are not a varmint rifle and they're not a big game rifle.  Yeah, yeah, a hundred guys will jump on here and tell me how many deer or coyotes they've killed with the .243.  I've killed as many with a .22lr or a .45-70...so what?  I guess they might be sweet on antelope or similar, but we're short of them here.  I just have no need for one, my pistol caliber carbines, the .45-70 and the .223 and .22-250 will handle anything I need....that isn't mentioning the larger necked calibers,  7mm-08, 308, '06, .30-30, 7.62, etc.  I don't deal in hides, so whatever kills effectively in a particular situation gets used, if it is Handi.

Congrats Spanky! I only shot a couple factory loads in mine before I had it rechambered to 6mm Ackley, but it did like the 80gr Remington PSP.

Thanks guys.
I hear what you're sayin' Pete... I've been overlooking the 243 for a long time without really knowing why. I just recently got a wild hair and decided to give it a try. I've got a 22-250 and a 7-08 so I guess I just wanted something in the middle that would be a decent all arounder for where I hunt.
If it don't spin my crank I can always sell the barrel and go with something different.  :)
