Almost killed the Chrony
« on: September 27, 2010, 07:21:31 AM »
Yesterday, when I was dinking around with a bunch of different rifles, I decided to check my .445 Supermags velocity...my loads against Widener's.  I set up the Chrony and blew the front right sky screen support to flinders with Widener's load.  The Chrony read 1856.  This brought up two questions:  1:  How could I be that stupid?  2:  How'd the Chrony read  a shot that was that far off?  I replaced the support with a section of .17 cleaning rod.  I'm taking Tim's advice and useing dowels in the future, and I'll glue the screen sections together and those to the dowels.  I hate putting that thing together.  You get the supports together and the screen flies appart.  You get the screen together and the supports crap out.

Ordinarily you try to "hit the hole".  In this case, you missed.   ;D

On the other hand...

Fine shooting Pete!  Dang difficult to bust the slender vertical support of the sky screen!

I'm sure you're right.  I only got the support, not the brains.  I'm still wondering, how come it read out?  I thought it would read "Error".  Perhaps the little piece that's missing flew through there??  Don't know.

My only advice is if you are going to shoot a fowling shot, don't aim at another one of the four targets you have hung up. That's all I am saying.

Zoner, they're  a little tough, but if ya marinate em in wine, soy, ginger, garlic, salt, pepper, red pepper, chives, etc. they eat well.  Ya kin save marinade by adding some punctured targets and blown up jugs.  If ya have a lot of marinade, ya kin add an old tire or two.

I done killed my crony with a sabot... slug over the top, sabot petals right through the read out screen...DOA, but I wasn't as honest as most of you, instead of using my only tag on the runt, I buried it in the field... ;)

concur, with thesis above of only two types of users...  and I'm in the first batch.

I had my first Chrony for almost ten years.  I won't say just exactly how it died, but I can tell you that they are so cheaply made that a 255 grain .45 caliber bullet at about 850 feet per second dead center through the screens will put one down for the count.  Can you imagaine? :)

It's brand new replacement told me that the very same load (45 ACP) was traveling over 4400 feet per second.  That was out of a three and three quarter inch barrel.

So I sent that one to Chrony and they fixed it.

Great little tools, don't know how I got along without one before.

Pete,  You are as bad as me.  I usually just buy those "for sale by owner" signs at Home Depot and plaster my targets over the signs inside the frames.  My favorite trick is blow all Hades out of the tubular metal frames.  Then, of course, I turn to the guy at the bench next to me and say, "bet you couldn't hit that little frame at this distance...."  :D

I kilt mine not with a bullet but with the muzzle blast from a 45-70.  Had it perched in a not so stable position and the first shot was all it took to get it to hop off then end of the table. :P  From readin' the above posts I guess I got to buy a new one and shoot it the proper way. ;D

Catshooter, you mine sharin' that 4,400 FPS 45 caliber load data?  I would love to try it in a long barrel gun, like by 5" 1911. ::)  Bet I could get close to 5,000 FPS! ;)

Yeah...that's the problem with Chrony's and Pacts...all the goodies are out their waiting for Murphy to jump on you.  I won't say how many supports or skyscreens...or how OFTEN...Murphy has eaten for lunch...but I have several sets of stupports and extra skyscreens close at hand READY TO GO.

Don't think you can shoot through the hole and be safe....it only takes a different load combination to change everything...or something to go amiss, like a loose base or scope mount etc.

I've taken out at least two supports that way...and having a spazzzzzz attack at the wrong moment will do it too...I won't say how I know that, but it is a fact.  ;D >:( :o

Funny thing...I've never killed any of my Oehler 33 pieces and parts...in all the 40 odd years I've had it...now watch...tomorrow while I'm futzing with my 9.3x62 I will take out BOTH Oehler sky screens just to make Murphy happy.   Sheeesh.

Luck

Pete,
You're a much better shot than me. Somehow, I shot the tripod holding up my chrony. I don't recall doing it as I discovered it when I was putting it all away. I have yet to set-up my screens, I just shoot straight over the chrony and it reads just fine.

Thanks, Dinny

Dinny, you bring up a very valid point.  Sky screens....If it is early morning and the sun isn't straight over head, what are they doing.  Next time I shoot I'm leaving them off to try.  I need to get out of here.  It is a shooting morning, clear, not too cold and no wind.  Bye.

Ahhhhh....you guy r light weights....I've been rebuilding skyscreens since the mid-1980s for my Oehler and its become a cottage industry for me.  Nothing beats the look of utter shock on a guy's face when hits a screen...."like...how did that like happen....like...did the wind like move the screen???...."   ::)

Well I must confess to fireing my ramrod down range. But I haven't shot my Crony ......yet. That being said, I will probably be the first to shoot a ramrod thru a crony. when I mess up I usually do a good job of it.

bikerbeans,

If I recall, that 45 auto load was two pounds of Unique.  Compressed a bit though.
