heavy bullets in 35 Whelen
« on: September 26, 2010, 05:56:50 PM »
I would like information from anyone here who has used heavy bullets, i.e.,  270gr, 275gr, 280gr and 310gr and what results you had with them as far as speed and accruacy.  I have a 24" barrel with 1 to 14 twist rate, my brother has two barrels, 26" - 1 to 14" and a 22" - 1 to 16".

Thanks  ;D

Well I bit the bullet, so to speak and ordered a sample pack with 5 different bullet weights---250gr Nosler Part., 270gr North Fork, 275gr Hawk, 280gr Swift A and 310 Woodliegh.

I will report back as soon as the shells come in and I've gone to the range. ;D

My Whelen is a rebored 1903 Springfield MK I, so it has a 1-10 twist and was chambered when the Whelen was still a wildcat with a long throat.  It has no problem with heavy bullets, but I have never loaded anything above 285grs.

You can never tell when a crazied carnioves saber-tooth wooley tree squirrel might attack!  As you can tell I might be watching way too much on the Sci-Fi channel. :o

But it never hurts to find another bullet weight that shoots well from my rifle.  Who knows, maybe a BIG HUNT could come my way and I will be ready for the BIG GAME without buying a BIG GUN.

35Whelen Rem700 1:16" with Woodleigh 310gr soft ... looked good at 100 yards, had 2 of 5 tipped at 200yards.
358Win with 1:14" and Woodleigh 310gr soft ... all 5 tipped at 100 yards.
350RemMag with 1:12" and Woodleigh 310gr ... stable at all distances.

I'd rather a 1:12" on all my 35s, but can live with a 1:14" ... about to build a 358Norma with 1:14" but it will probably live on a diet of 200gr TSX plus 9.3mm 286gr Woodleighs resized to 0.358". I love heavy RN pills.
Cheers...

I've shot 280 grainers in my 1:14.  Seemed to stabilize, however these were home-cast paper patched bullets.  I don't think the Adams & Bennett chamber lends itself to paper patched bullets real well.   Bullet hole were round, groups good, however fliers were too numerous.
