240 weatherby?
« on: September 24, 2010, 05:58:19 PM »
I've always wanted a 240 weatherby, cant tell ya why. It's basicly a 6mm-06 with a belt and rounded weatherby shoulders. Could this be rechambered in a 243 and work in the handi? As for as pressure and extractor?

The taper might be an issue.  They are same size at the base, but per the wiki anyway, it looks like the .240 tapers more quickly.  I'm not a smith though, so perhaps with the extra length, it'd clear the taper.  Have to see what others think.  8)

No it wount work,  The base diameter of the 243 is to large and the 240 W is a slimmer cartridge for it full length.  Sorry.   :'(

As Jed said, the 240 wouldn't work due to the shoulder width of the 243 being bigger, but a 6mm-06AI rechambered 243 would work and provide better performance than the Weatherby, and brass would be a lot cheaper.  ;)

Or a 6mm-284, about the same capacity as the 6mm-06 but shorter case, components as easy to get as for the '06 and a very old and well established wildcat.  I've burned up 3 6mm-284 barrels and still have all the reloading pieces and parts.  But you really need a 26" minimum barrel length to get all that extra case capacity potential and 28" is better...a 243 is just right in the 22" Handi

There are a bunch of cases that would work including several rimmed ones.

I wouldn't recommend any of the belted cased ones in the Handi tho', unless you are an advanced reloader.

Luck

Sometimes Remington has limited runs of their Accellerator ammo, 30-06 case with a sabotted (sabotaged?) 22, advertised at 4,000 fps.  Not quite a 240/243/6mm-06, but then much less of an investment.
