Staining Laminate stocks to change color
« on: September 23, 2010, 12:20:59 PM »
Has anyone stained the cinnamon laminate stocks to a different color, and if so how did it come out. The reason I ask, is I have a set of cinnamon stocks that I would like to make ebony for one of my stainless barrel guns.

It would be a shame to ruin a lam set. Just a thought but maybe someone will trade and you could stain a pallet set black. We know those will take a stain once the varnish is off. I am not sure the glue between the wood would take the set. Although if that was the look you were going for it might look cool but I would be scared to ruin an expensive set of wood.
Wait this isn't what you asked, let me edit my answer.....
Nope, never did it, but hope it turns out nice for you. Please post pics when you are done.

I've never done it, but one possible though would be to remove the varnish, then use a capful of bleach in some water and paint it on a few times lightly to open the pores and possibly remove some of the original color from the wood layers.  Then soak it in grey or black dye and it should take the darker color to some degree.  Just a thought.  ;)  I really like the black silver color stocks and have them on my traditional ML rifle and pistol:

Thanks 8)

*edit*
by the way, the rifles made their way back into the specials bin, so they are on sale for $289 right now.  I caught a specials bin run for $249 when I got this one.  They also have a flint lock version called the frontier rifle and the percussion version of the same in there too right now for the same price.  Nice guns, albeit the triggers aren't great.  First thing when I buy one I disassemble, clean out the action and oil the wood where the lock goes in and this helps keep them from rusting.  I also smooth the trigger trip spur and adjust the lock set screw down so they are a bit smoother.  I got the buckskinner pistol in their bargain bin also for $149 and that deal comes and goes.  So I got both for about the cost of just 1 rifle - actually less than.  8)

That is exactly what I am looking for. How much water per cap full of bleach? What kind of die?

I'd use 1 capful per gallon and you can probably use RIT dye since it is readily available.  8)

I tried RIT but it was too muddy color... so I used some Tandy leather dye instead which really did visible color.  But I was going for purple.

I think I'd use an alcohol based dye aniline dye to go deep and clear.  With the resin in the laminated wood, water might not penetrate very well.
Think as if you LIFE depends on it... IT does..!  Be Well...

Where do you get aniline dye?

Where do you get aniline dye?

Most of Tandy Leather dye's have converted to Eco Flo which is water based, although they still have one type of spirit based:
