Author Topic: Savage 110FP 25-06 Did I Do OK (Read 1582 times)

Was out christmas shopping for my wife today, when I stopped at my local gun store to see what was happening since I haven't been their for a couple of months. Walk down past the used rifles when I spotted one and pick it up. It was a Savage 110FP 25-06, 24" heavy barrel in blue with the new accutrigger. Yellow tag sale for 239.00 and it came with the box and papersl, I couldn't believe it. Somebody bought it and never even fired the rifle or put a scope on it and traded it in for something else.

I now own this rifle. This is brand new rifle, I can't believe it, do you thing I got a pretty good deal. Never own a 25-06 before, but have heard allot about them. Will put a new stock with pillar bedding on it and put a top of the line scope and bipod on it and I will have a long range shooter for varmits plus with heavy bullets, whitetail or mule deer.

Did you do good - man you did great. The 25-06 is an awesome cartridge and at that price you came out way ahead.

dbuck before you go messin with the stock and bedding you may want to try it out at the range. Savages are known to be pretty good shooters right out of the box. You got a heck of a deal.

Gents, I want mess it up, I reload my own so I will try out various bullets and power to get the best groups. As far as optics go, will get a Nikron Monarach and I will cool it for awhile with the stock.

Can anyone tell me about recoil with this caliber in comparing it to a 270 or 308 which I own.

Serious in my 2506 I have one load 115 nosler part.rem case, cci 250 primer and imr 4831 it loves that load . Good luck and happy hunting................ PS. in a comparson I also have a 270 and a 308 the 2506 is less not a big difference in like weight rifles my 308 is a light weight carbine it tends to bark and kick a tad but my 270 is the twin of it and its less :grin:

try the 75gr V-Max. it is an awsome bullet. for deer i would use a 90 or 100gr barnes.

i wish i could find a deal like that. good luck with that rifle.

I am a big fan of the "Quarter Bores" with the .25-06 leading the way. In the 40 years I have been shooting the .25-06, before Remington made it a factory cartridge and gave it their name, I have not found a better deer killer. Recoil is somewhat less than the .270 and it is a much better all around cartridge. As a long range varmint cartridge it is a good choice using bullets from 75 to 90 grains. For deer go with 100 grain or larger and use premium bullets like Nosler Partitions or the Barnes 100 grain XLC. We're talking about a cartridge that will easily drive a 115 grain bullet over 3,100 fps. so some bullets don't hold together on impact. Two of the three .25-06's I own now wear heavy barrels and shoot at or under 3/4". Even my Ruger No.1B shoots MOA or better. I think you made a great deal as the Savage is know to be about the most accurate rifle out of the box going today. Have fun with your new .25-06 and keep us informed on how it works for you. Lawdog

I cannot speak for your exact model, but in my opinion Savages are more than adequate. I just bought a Savage model 10FPLE heavy 26" barrel in .308 with a Mcmillan A2 fiberglass stock and the accutrigger for$725 about 4 months ago. Since I was broke, but could not stand to leave the rifle alone, I bought a $59 BEC optic and took it to the range. This thing will hit within 1/2 of where you aim it with red box Black hills ammo. I'd say you should be happy. I'm happy with my Savage. My barrel is a fast 1 in 10 twist , so it favors heavier bullets. I don't know if that is common with Savage, but you might want to keep that in mind.

You asked about recoil...

Well, with the standard 117 grain bullets (for big game) the recoil is less than the .270 with 130 grain bullets.

I have a .25-06 in my Tikka Laminated Stainless. It's a fun cartridge. I think that it will be even more fun with the lighter bullets for varmints.

A new gun with accutrigger for under $250? I'm not a Savage fan, but that's a hard deal to pass up.

It wasn't a Tikka, but I sure couldn't pass on this deal. I purchased some Nosler 100 gr. BT today, just to try them out. Will be purchasing other grains to try them out.

I shoot the 25-06 and absolutley LOVE it! I use 100 grain Barnes XLC for deer and it is deadly. You can buy Federal Premium's with this load that are scooting at about 3200 FPS or you can load your own and get it in the neighborhood of 3350-3400 FPS. Set it at about 2" high at 100 yds and it will be dead on at 200 yds and about 6" low at 300 yds. It's an awsome round, that's for sure. One thing about bullets that I found, at least ofr my rifle, is that the Nosler Partitions are not very accurate. For deer I would stick with the 100 gr. Barnes XLC or the 115 gr. Trophy Bonded Bear Claw. Congrats and good shooting.

Oh yeah, on recoil. I can shoot my 25-06 all day and twice tomorrow and never feel it. It's a sweet shooting round. Just be sure to wear ear protection because it is a very LOUD round.

I haven't found the .25-06 to be any louder than, say, a .270, or most other similar cartridges. Still, I always wear hearing protection.

As for the Barnes X, I love it. Despite the fact that all of my guns which are loaded with the X are very accurate, there is no denying that in some guns they group horribly and, thus, people hate them.

It's nice to hear that they shoot well in your .25-06. Given that they retain 100% of their weight, I think that a 100 grain X would be perfect for deer sized game in the 25-06.

They have a tendency to break up on impact with bone when the velocities are over 2900 fps.. I almost lost three real nice bucks using them even though they were solid heart/lung hits. Thankfully friends were along to finish off these deer. Barnes 100 gr. XLC's are great. The faster you drive them the better they work. Lawdog

Thanks for the heads up, I just really purchased these Nosler BT's for target practice at 200 yards to see what kind of accuracy I will get. Will purchase some Barnes 100 gr XLC's for deer hunting.

If we were just target shooting at 200 yards and wanted the best accuracy out of this rifle, what would you recommend.

The most accurate bullet for target shooting I have ever found is the .257 cal. 100 gr. HPBT MatchKing by Sierra. The pits for game but it gives me the best accuracy in any of my Quarter Bores. Lawdog

Congratulations, I think you will be pleased with your rifle. I myself own your exact rifle and I am very happy with it. Recoil shouldn't be any problem at all, it is a very heavy rifle, especially with a scope and a bipod. I estimate it will tip the scales at around 10-12 pounds. I now have one of those choate target/sniper stocks, which is a very heavy stock, and with my scope and harris bipod my rifle weights arround 13-15 pounds. With this setup, it kicks less than our old 700 BDL in 243.

Accuracy is very good. I have used the sierra 90 gr HPBT, 117 gr SBT, and 120 HPBT. All of these bullets have given me 1/2 moa groups, while the HPBTs have given me groups less than 1/4 inch at 100 yards. The powder I use is IMR 4350 and IMR 4381. If I could get more time at the range (school) I bet I could get tigher groups.

I only have two problems with the rifle:

1.) This rifle was one of the old savages that didn't have and can't be upgrade to the accutrigger (had to go the rifle basix route)

2.) Savage has stopped producing their 110 FPs in a left-hand long action.

I also put a Choate Tactical Stock on mine and a Harris bipod and a Burris Fullfield II 4.5X14X42 scope and you are right it is quite heavy.

The only think I don't like about the Savage is how hard the bolt is to operate compared to a Remington 700. I don't know if their is anything you can do about that, I believe it has to do with the spring inside the bolt that makes it so stiff.
