.454 carbines, anyone shot one a lot?
« on: December 04, 2003, 02:55:45 PM »
I was just wondering how well the .454 carbines Rossi/Puma/Legacy sells hold up.  I remeber some gun industry people saying that they would shoot loose with full house .454 ammo.  Who has one and how do you like it ?  Thanks in advance,  Mike C

I have 454 Puma- been shot alot still as tight as the day I bought it. You know you want one so loosen up the purse strings and get one!!!

As for bullet weights I've only been messing with 230-300 gr cast and jacket. Don't really have the need to go bigger then that, since it will take anything we have here in ID with a 300 gr!! Plus the molds for anything above 300 gr are all custom jobs and way to expesive!! I'm waiting on Lee to come out with a 310, 325 or 340 gr mold-Hint Hint!!!  I think a 340 gr WFN would be the cats meow in the 454 Rossi. Good balance of weight a velocity 1600-1700 fps What a thumper that would be. :-D

Many "Ask The Experts" were pretty blunt in their negative opinions of the Rossi 454 Casull. They were under the impression that if their favorite manufacture could not come out with a lever action in 454 Casull then how could an "Italian???" company do so. After all Italian/Brazilian firearms are junk. But the experts are pretty much mute now.

Just goes to show that most "experts" talk and think out of their arse.

I hope to buy a Rossi in 454 Casull. I have a large loop lever ready to attach. But I have so many projects backlogged.

I have had mine since last spring.  I love it.  I slicked up the trigger a bit as well as the action...It wasnt a must to be done, but it is a smoother and easier shooting iron now.  Anyways, I havent shot it loose, I have put probably 400 full power reloads through it as well as countless 45 Colt loads through it.  I put a new front sight with a pearl bead on it so that I could see better and to cover the difference between where the colt and the fullpower loads hit.  I love it
Its all the power anyone would need and it carries like a dream.  If I had to do it again, I would in a heart beat.  I am not sure which caliber my next Puma will be, but it will be a Puma.  Go for it.

I paid $375  for mine- Scope? You'd have to use a side mount or barrel mount as it is a top eject.  I don't know of one that would work with out drilling- also you want a long eye relief to keep from getting the dreaded scope bite!! Recoil is still pretty steep even in a rifle!!

Rossi is made in Brazil not Italy. But they are well made for sure.

I know that Rossi's are made in Brazil.

But that was the information some were passing on. Actually they couldn't decide if it was Spain or Italy. Then they were saying that the Rossi were really the El Tigre reincarnated. That is the level of mentality of "Ask the Experts" over at the auction forum. They criticize without having the correct information. Much like the liberal press.

But they really get upset when you question their expertise.

But I have to get off my arse and get a Rossi Puma in 454 Casull. I would prefer  one with a 16" barrel. But it just doesn't look right with that butt pad. I guess I'll settle for one with a 20" barrel. Probably in blue.

But I have a Winchester 94 Cowboy Commemorative on lay-a-way to pay off first.

On attaching a scope. A guy on another forum installed a scope on the bolt of his top eject Winchester. It could work on the Rossi.

DANA.

ONE OF MY WINCHESTER LEVERS HAS A BEEMANS #3 SCOPE MOUNTED DIRECTLY ON THE BOLT SO IS OVER THE BARREL SIGHT LINE. AT THE TIME WHEN I HAD THE SCOPE MOUNTED I HAD A BASE MADE AND ATTACHED BY A GUNSMITH AS THERE WAS NOT AN ADAPTER FOR THE BEEMANS FOR A WEAVER BASE. NOW YOU CAN MOUNT A BEEMANS ON A WEAVER BASE AND WOULD ONLY REQUIRE THE BOLT TO BE DRILLED AND TAPPED. THE ONLY TROUBLE WITH A SET UP LIKE MINE IS THE SCOPE MUST BE SHORT OR IT WILL BE IN THE WAY FOR EJECTION.
