6.8spc?
« on: September 01, 2010, 06:44:48 AM »
Probably going to get a 6.8 upper to add to my AR goodness.

Any 6.8 fans around here? I think it will make a great deer/hog gun....

Cheese will be along shortly to talk about this.

I had a 6.8mm SPC rifle and it would have been legal to hunt deer with in my state I'd probably still have it.  The ammo available is limited but there is some variety for just about anything.  Just make sure you buy the current twist & chamber of the 6.8mm SPC.  I think it's changed a few times since it was originally released.

does this help:

can not beat a one shot-one kill by an 8 y/o.

I love my RRA 6.8.  Have killed many hogs, a few deer and coyotes.  Would have more, but a fight with skin cancer put a small halt to hunting for now.

This cartridge continues to grow in popularity with rifle manufacturers, ammo companies and shooters. I have been using my Bushmaster M4 6.8 SPC in a 300 yard military rifle competition with great success. I have yet to take any game with it, but will use it for whitetail this year.

I recommend it.

Will someone please explain the differences between the 6.8 and the 260 Rem.  Both 6.5mm bore, right?  260 based on the 308 case, right?  6.8 based on what, the 30 Rem or something?  Different shoulder angles?  Different twists, I'm almost sure, right?  Another 100'/sec or so, right?  Please and thank ya.

6.8 is a .277 caliber (same as 270 win as far as caliber of the projectile) .260 is 6.5mm or .264 caliber (same as 264 win mag, 6.5 rem mag) 6.8 is made from a 30 remington case and the 260 is from the 308 case. 6.8 is capable of 2800 fps with a 100gr. bullet, and the 260 is capable of 3200fps with a 100gr bullet. Another thing is due to the 6.8 being made for the AR platform it's kinda limited to 115 gr. bullets or lighter in order to be short enough to run throught he action where if it were in a bolt gun you can go up a bit higher but like the 308 can shoot 200-220 grain bullets it really doesn't have the charge to really use them effectivly hence 180 is usually the heaviest bulet loading for it. You can load up and use effectivly to 130 grainers in the 6.8. Hope this helps.

If and when you buy your upper look at the upper reciver to see if it is an M4 . If so it will have feed ramps as will your bbl extension . I have one like this . Problem is there is a step where the feed ramps meet . I have yet to find a mag that will feed . I have tried several brands . Have modifyed mags. nothing works . I feel this step is the problem not the mag as most think. If i buy another i would only do so if the ramps had NO step and were polished smooth. Most have said the 6.8 needs the ramps in the upper . As for shooting (even single shot) it is a great round.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

What upper did you buy? The feed ramps are a big deal to me (not so much with 5.56), one reason why i wont buy a Stag 6.8 even though i've had great experiences with their 556 stuff.

Also, i'm putting my quest for a 6.8 on hold. I'm going to try the .223 on deer this year, using 62gr TSX bullets. If it works, i wont need the SPC. Plus i already have a handy little .243 bolt action (mohawk 600).

You could always get a new upper receiver or just clean up the ramps yourself (or have a smith do it).

I have been hunting with a 6.8 for several years now
killled a lot of hogs and deer with one

my preferred load is a Barnes 95 TTSX

Never lost anything I have put the crosshairs on and they are just as dead, just as quick as if i used my 308, 270, etc.

If I am after a trophy buck and expect to have over 300 yard shots, I grab my 308, but 99% of the time, I grab the 6.8

It's very accurate, light, and just a lot of fun

I alternate between an Aimpoint T1 and an Accupoint 3-9 both on QR mounts

I've been interested in this round for quite a while now.  Probably will get one eventually, but I'm thinking of doing it in a T/C Encore.  I've got an AR15 with a regular 5.56 NATO upper and I enjoy it at the range, but I just can't picture myself hunting with that gun.

I'd hope so with that much ammo on hand.  What bullet did you use this time?  I hope you get a deer with it this year, because I'd love to hear how it worked for you.

For a long time I had no interest in the 6.8.  Then I read up on it & decided it sounds like a great low recoil, east of the Miss., whitetail round.  So I started to order a barrel for my Contender & everything else that goes with it until I got to the "BRASS" !  From Midway,  Remington brass is backordered until 12/24/'10, Silver State until 10/31/'10, & Hornady until 3/15/2011  :o !

WHAT'S WITH THAT ?  ???   -  Jim

The best deals on brass, in my experience, are always on gunbroker.  Plenty of non-reloading guys selling their once fired brass for half the price of new.  I've got tons of brass off gunbroker that way and I continue to do it.

I've seen some really good prices here on the GB classifieds too.  Got 1000 pcs of .38 special for either $20 or $25.  Can't remember for sure, but it was a good price either way.

I'll admit too, that I've went out to the local range and just picked up brass before too (it's a publicly funded range with no staff, so picking up brass is seen as cleaning up and encouraged).  I have a virtually unlimited supply of 9x19 brass from that source.  I also turn up a decent supply of .38 spcl, .45 ACP, and other pistol rounds.  Rifle rounds are rarer as a lot of people are taking their brass back with them (either to reload or to just not leave them on the ground), and in general fewer rifle rounds are fired compared to the handguns.  I do find a lot of .223 thrown from the AR15 folk though :).

I agree about the GB classifides also.  My luck is that I never see what I'm looking for, or I'm too late.  There have been incredible deals on here.

I've been wondering about this round for deer myself.  Just found a contender in 6.8 at a good price, and wondering if this would be a useful round.  I can reload or buy ammo locally for reasonable price.  Looking to use this in woods and a blind.

Just shot my contender carbine yesterday for the first time and love it. Shot Hornady ammo about 1" at 100yds. The only problem is I let my wife shoot it and now she wants it this deer season. Maybe I can sneak her A-bolt micro 7mm-08 out while she's getting venison with the 6.8. As far as brass goes, I would buy and shoot factory stuff for the brass(around $20 a box) before I'd pay $50/100 for new brass.
