One of the finest rifles ever built. The craftsmanship is some of the best there was. I have one made just a little earlier than yours, serial number, 67XXX. Mine shoots great, feeds those 30-06 shells like you wouldn't believe and just says, "class." I'm debating whether I should leave mine stock, or turn it into something else. They are a little heavy, does yours still have the steel butt plate, or does it have a recoil pad installed? Mine still has the steel butt plate, I need to have the stock shortened to 13 3/8"s with recoil pad. Mine has shot a best group of 1 1/4, but I haven't shot it that much. Used it for half of my Elk hunt this year, and shot a coyote with it.

Don't cut that stock, just buy one on Ebay already cut.  The unaltered stocks are worth some serious change while the recoil fitted ones bring only 25 to 35% on the open market.

I've heard that before. Mine was refinished many years ago by someone. They even sanded the checkering.  :? It has also been reblued. I suppose the stock could be brought back to original though, the checkering has just been dulled down, it's still there.

What do they go for on E-Bay?

The refinish on the stock isn't as important as the refinish on the metal.  The stock can be rehabbed the metal may be more difficult..  Buy a replacement stock for the M70.  You be glad you did in the long run.

:D well i finally got the 1946 win mod 70 30.06 in my hands, and it is perfect. friend of mine has a pre64 mod 70 in a .270 and his seems heavier than mine? still no complaints, she is very very pretty for being 68yrs old. bore is very clear and shinny. going to work up a 150gr deer load and a 180gr elk load that she likes. i'll let you know if she's a real shooter or if she's a look at rifle.
thanks
