Wondering about Encore 357max/mag bbl length/vel/accuracy
« on: August 24, 2010, 07:01:04 PM »
Just wondering from someone that has a Encore 357 max or mag bbl what length gives you the most velocity and best accuracy out of this handgun cartridge. Also does it effect accuracy all that much to use 38 spcl, and 357 magnum in a bbl chambered for the 357 max. would like to get the most out of my bbl purchase and I already reload for all three calibers. Any insight or ideas would be greatly appreciated...

I don't know what barrel length will give you max velocity but being essentially a handgun round I don't think a very long barrel is needed to reach top speed. I'm using aT/C with an 18" barrel with AA1680 and 180gr SSP's seated at the cannelure and at max charge I'm right around 2000fps. With that combination accuracy is about 2" at 100 yards. With the bullets seated out further and a little more powder most guys I think are getting around 2200fps with similar set-ups and accuracy would improve as well. I haven't tried it with magnum or special cases so no info on that front.

I think shorter barrel = greater accuracy.  I would definitely not go longer than 20".  If it were me, I'd get 16.5"

Thankyou for the info... I'll have to take a look around and find a 357 bbl to mess around with...

I can offer (2) comparisons from different barrel lengths from (2) different guns.  With the same load of 28.0 gr. of AA1680 and a Hornady 180 SSP, a 24" MGM barrel on an Encore frame produced 2205 fps and a 22" Ruger No. 1 produced 2165 fps.  With two different guns other things like throat length, bore condition and size all come into play.  Without staying with the same gun, starting with a long barrel and cutting it inch by inch and recrowning between cuts, it's difficult to say for sure.  Faster burning powders like H110 will reach the point of diminishing returns on barrel length quicker than slower burning powders like 1680 and RE7.  1680 is on the slow side so longer barrels may show a bit more velocity.  I do agree with JY that shorter barrels are more accurate than longer barrels.  Since these guns are typically used for hunting, the benefit of a longer barrel to gain velocity for a flatter shooting and harder hitting round may offer some benefit but this is for the individual to decide.  Strictly my own opinion, I think with the .357 Maximum, a hunting rifle is at it's best between 20-24" and a heavy barrel is even better.
Good Shooting,
Steve

I just got a 20" MGM .357 max barrel. I haven't chronographed any loads yet, but I will soon. I definitely agree with Steve, make it a heavier barrel contour, not the ultralight like mine. ;)

Thanks, Dinny
