"What does a Ruger #1 have in common with a Handi?"

Answer could be:

Both made in da US fo A.

Both have very limited magazine capacity.

Both tend to be owned by fanatics.

Who needs that third shot!!  ::)

BB,

Correct on all but me liking the Ruger, luke warm on that, I've only handled one in 375H&H, did nothing for me, I think a #3 would be more to my liking, but have never seen one that I can recollect.

I think it is easier to state what the Rugers do not have in common.
Both are single shot.
Other than that:
The handi is barrel changable (to a point)
The Ruger and the Browning 1885 have adjustable ejectors that can be made to extractors and back  The handi is one or the other.
The Ruger comes as a model and unless you take it to a gunsmith it stays that model.
The handi can be transformed into many different configurations.
The ruger is easier to load for varmint shooting when a bipod is used.
As far as I remember Ruger has not made pistol caliber No.1's they did make 44 mage No 3's
OH Ruger does not make a rimfire or shotgun version of the No. 1.

What I would like is to see a melding of advantages of the two designs.
The strength of the falling block and the caliber inter-changability of the Handi.
Allowing from pistol calibers to 375H&H.

The #1 has a HIGH 'Fonding Factor'.

I like them both.

I have the #3 in 45-70 with 2.5x leupold.  If I could have only one of guns that I own now, this would be it.  Of course a 45-70 that only weighs 5-5.5 lbs does tend to smack you around.

Lipsey's specials currently offer the #1 in 257 Roberts, 30-30 Winchester, 35 Whelen, 6.5x55mm Swede, 7x57mm Mauser, 450/400 NE, 450 NE, 300 H&H Magnum and 375 Ruger.  Really thinking about the 30-30 Winchester, but the others would be really hard to turn down if I could get one in my hands at a gun-show.

I better stop now, starting to drool down my face.

Made in the US, single shot, both can take tweeking to shoot!!!! I can't wait to read Fred's response. I loath for a 1 A light sporter in 7X57. That would be my first and last Ruger in my safe, centerfire that is.

I just thought it was kinda sweet that the $1000 Ruger still shoots two together and a flyer on every target that fella shot (there were more than just those two), just like a lot of Handis, didn't bother him a bit, he took it to Africa and killed a bunch of plains game!!  ;D

Isn't the 9.3X74 the cartridge that some people use to make special brass that fits the .45/.410 chambers to get better accuracy?

Have you tried the 450 Mongo yet? That would be one way to get that brass into a Handi  :D

Naw, that's pretty much a novelty, never saw much need for a .410 either. I could always have Wayne stub a 9.3x74R if I really had to have one, but a 26" 25-06 or 280 barrel sure would make a nice conversion. ;)

As far as I remember Ruger has not made pistol caliber No.1's they did make 44 mage No 3's

Ruger currently offers a #1 in 475 Linebaugh/480 Ruger and is doing one in 460 S&W. They have made #1's in .357 in the past, although they are not common.

9.3x74R is a factory offered caliber For Ruger in the #1 now, as is the 450/400 NE.

A friend of mine owns a gun shop and does consignment gun sales.  He showed me a very nice #1 in 357 Mag early this summer.  I liked it a lot until he told me the owner wanted over a grand for it.  I bought the Talo 357 Trapper instead.

I plan to leave my two #1's to my kids, or their kids.
My first CF rifle was a Handi, had a lot of fun shooting and learning to load for it.
Sold it to a friend so it could be his son's first gun.
I share all that just for the opportunity to weigh in on gendoc.

My perception is that gendoc is probably more like Sgt Carter.
He was the one that made things go boom.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

The most interesting #1 I ever saw was a stainless, grey laminate stock, 405 winchester, at a gun show in KC a couple of years ago. I bet that would have made Quick's eyes narrow a bit........... ::)

My 405 started life in gray lams, stainless doesn't float my boat in the least, so no sweat there.  :D
