H&R .44
« on: August 22, 2010, 06:40:48 PM »
I am considering this set up for my daughter.Recoil is not a factor as she has been shooting a Sav.10 ML-II for a couple years. The Sav. is a bit to long and heavy for her. What i am needing to know from you guys is what kind of out of the box accuracy can be expected? Typical velocities? She shot one at the range last year and really like it so I promised her I would check into it.I need to know the good, the bad and the ugly. Thanks in advance for your time....

You might consider the .45 Colt also.  Mine is very accurate, although it had some chamber issues, I now have a brand new one to break in.  The .45 colt is light recoiling and will dispatch deer or other targets with abandon.  There's a lot of links here based on questions concerning this gun.  A lot of guys like the .44's also, though, so I'll let them fill you in on the other.  I haven't and don't have plans to own one.  ;)  Right now they are on sale at CDNN and Davidson's gallery of guns.

Welcome to the forum tar12...

If you do a search, you will come up with a great deal of info on the 44 mag. I have one of these rifles and I really like it. No bad or ugly comments on this gun from me. I plan on deer hunting with it this year. I am about an inch group at 50 yds. out of the box. I reload for it as well, so that helps with cost. Minute of deer for sure. Personally I don't think the recoil is very harsh at all. With the ft lbs of energy produced by the 44, it should cause the blood to run backwards, and be an instant or very short death for the whitetail...

We need more dad's and grandpa's to do what you are doing with your daughter in the shooting world...

Oh, don't forget to check out the FAQ..

This is my daughter and her Sav.10 ML.The girl can flat shoot.she currently shoots 42 grns of N110 behind a 250 grn xtp and Harvester sabot at approx. 2150-2200 fps. While this load is very accurate and deadly and has accounted for 4 deer for her,the gun itself is a bit long and heavy for her, hence the inquiry regarding the .44. Recoil is NOT a factor for her as I have been packing her to the range for a long time and she has already shot the Handi-rifle in .44 mag at the range last year.Upon firing it she turned to me and said daddy I want one! I can not deny my hunting buddy! Keep the unbiased info coming! I do appreciate it! BTW,the target was shot a 100 yds.....

I picked one up this year and am very impressed with it.  It shoots 1-1/2" @ 100 yd. with Winchester 240 gr. softpoint factory ammo.  The barrel is heavy, but by cutting it down a bit and putting a youth buttstock on it, it would be perfect.

They're all do-it-yourself mods, no need for a smith, see the FAQs and Help sticky. Lots of posts on the Talo Trappers, just look back a few pages.  ;)
