How long has the 35 whelen been chambered in handi-rifles?

First was in 1996 in the RMEF Ultra with a 26" barrel, then again in 2006 as a 22" Handi, and again in 2009 and is a current offering in three different stocks, wood, checkered synthetic and Handi-grip.

I have one of the original RMEF barrels on a standard action.  H&R barreled one up for me in 1996.  That gun has taken Moose, and lots of Black Bears.  I really do like that longer barrel.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

The longer barrel does make a little difference, Mattparliament got 2800fps with RL15 under the 225gr TSX in his 22" Handi, I got 2895fps with the same load in the 26" RMEF. I seriously consider rechambering the RMEF to 35 Whelen Improved, but decided to do it to the 22" Handi instead, didn't want to "ruin" the RMEF!!  ::)

Yup, between the Mississippi primitive weapons season and the interest in the poll we generated, while it was for an accessory barrel, H&R brought them back from the mothball fleet as complete rifles, accessory barrels have been in short supply, they make more money on complete firearms.

How did you set the barrel back on the improved?  I believe the Improved is about .004" shorter at the shoulder than the std '06 family.  Or is the chamber at or slightly over max length?

It's not an Ackley, factory ammo can't be fired in it, brass has to be fire formed first, see handloading for an improved chamber in the FAQs. You can make a true Ackley on a fixed barrel by removing material from the chamber face, then rechambering with an improved reamer and refitting the barrel with a shim, I've done it on a 270 Win barrel, it shoots factory ammo just fine. The chamber face on it wasn't square, so I squared it up by flat filing it, by the time it was true, the chamber was too shallow, so instead of running a standard reamer into it, I rented a 270Win Improved 40º reamer and did it myself by hand.
